I lived in manhattan in the east village with a car. you dont need to rent a parking space if you pick the right neighborhood and park at the right time of day. i commuted out so it was really easy tp find parking when i came home from work. daytime is a lot harder since there is alternate side. but it is still very doable. you can share a place for $1000 ea or so. I lived in a converted 1 BR and i paid $900. so it is doable... you just have to make it work. also, if you really want the car, insure it out of state. i insured mine at my parent's house and that makes a huge difference.

As a person who just moved here 4 months ago. I absolutely love NYC. It is possible to live here and find deals. You should consider Jersey City and Harlem - they are up and coming areas. The East Village is great but it may be harder to find something now.

I agree, Living in NYC would seem more of a hassel than a good time. I live in New Brunswick N.J. and go to Rutgers, it's only a 40min. train ride to the city, so i can go whenever i want without having to deal with the problems of living there. And my parents are gonna lease an apartment on 72nd and York for 6g a month - it's a 2br 2full bath with an amazing view from the 48th floor.

I lived in Washington DC for 12 years!!! No offence to DC TA's - you're not typical DC - DC SUCKS! Take my word on it. You want to live in a city made for POLITICIANS???? Move to New York

What Thero says is true, living in the outlying area will cut your costs and you can still live here. If you don't have a car, consider Astoria. You can get a nice studio for $800 which is on par with DC prices.

NYC is waaay expensive...
as a matter of fact NYS is the state paying the highest taxes in the nation....!..
anyway, you could die struggling to find somewhere decent in Manhattan for under 1200.. even in Hoboken,on- its just the same...
and when I mean decent, I mean a studio/apartment that was initally built to BE a studio/apartment..
not a hall storage closet
and also car insurance IN the city will definitely run you over $1000.

I call myself a dcta, but wouldnt even think twice about living in dc. Way too many cons about dc to be living there. Are they allowed to drink the water there yet?

Hah hah. Good one. I almost forgot about this.

For you folks who wouldn't know, the health department put out a warning on DRINKING THE TAP WATER in DC because there have been too many positive tests for lead and fecal contamination. Residents of DC are advised to filter their water or drink it bottled. most restaurants have installed filtration systems as a preventative measure or are urged to do so.

After being in NYC for a couple months, it really hit home how cold and unfriendly people are in DC. I lived in one apt for 8 years and I never ever met or knew my neighbors. On the 3rd day (no shit) people in my walk-up building came by to say hello. Folks in my building are all 20-30 somethings. Washington can be pretty lonely if you don't know anyone I managed to meet only a handful of people while I was there and saw many folks just get up and leave. Something you many not realize is that there is a serious amount of passive aggression in a workplace in DC. I'm much happier with my job in New York.


People in New York are more outgoing and it's a more sociable city. Brian (VTec_Junkie) I hope you're reading this!
