2. MP3's sound quality is far more inferior than MD. MP3 compresses sound data in 1:10 destructive ratio which may result in the loss of sound quality (encoding at 128kb sampling rate or below). MD uses ATRAC technology to compress sound in 1:5 ratio by eliminating noises and inaudible frequencies, preserving the dept of sounds. MiniDisc can actually sound better than a CD. MP3 cannot.
3. The various existing MD equipments, along with the removable colorful discs and labels, be can be easily individualized to show different personal styles. MP3s uses non-removable media, hard to be personalized.

Ok, 1) if you're going to be using the MD to listen to copies of your CDs or to copies of MP3s, it doesn't matter how good the sound quality on the MD can be, because it's still limited to the CD and/or MP3 that you originally got the copy from.
2) A VBR MP3 recorded via LAME --r3mix is considered "archival" quality - ie, virtually indistinguishable from the original source. Typically, an album encoded with --r3mix takes roughly 60 to 80 mb. of space, depending on the type/complexity of the music. Therefore, you can get roughly 10 full albums onto 1 80 minute CD. With a minidisc... you get what, 74 minutes at full quality? MP3 wins hands down.
3) As was mentioned before, the RioVolt line has upgradable firmware. Which means updates - so your player (in theory) won't be obsolete in 3 weeks.
4) And as to MP3s using non-removable media... we're talking about MP3 cd players. Blank CDs come in virtually every color. And they're CHEAP - unlike minidiscs. Nowadays, $20 can get you a spindle of 100 blanks.
Virtually the only reason that I can think of that you might want to choose MD is the fact that you can use them as recorders, which you can't for MP3 cd players. Some solid-state players will do it, but CD players won't. So if you want a really compact live recording device, go with a minidisc player. If you want tons of tunes to take with you wherever you go... go with the MP3 player.
And that's just my $0.02.
