Italians have a reputation for style, but i don't think they deserve it as much nowadays... anyway back to the point:

a year back i thought this through, and got an MD, sharp 831, equiv. of sony MZR 90 at the time. Now i wan't something smaller and lighter still so i'm getting the play only MZE 900 (have a look on sony.com) this is gorgeous player. I still think MP3 is not for me. 128mb means i can't even store 1 album (i use 320kbps = 170mb) if 128mb is good enough then there's no question about what's best - the new (not officially out in uk) Sony network walkman 10. at last sony solid state that can play MP3 not just ATRAC.

One of my problems w/ MP3 is what i get now will be obsolete in just 1 year. once you're able to get 512+ mb (2 year or so) in small size then i will buy.

I choose MD because i want ultra small portable with small cheap media. MD will be around for a while yet (till solid state is much better and bigger and cheaper)
Md has currently got some big advantages: Price (inc. media), compatibility (loads of people have MD's) and ability to record from anywhere.

Note Sony are releasing products that can record 4x dubbing. I think they have a mini system that can, and some seperates: LISSA range.
They also have links for PC to MD (dedicated w/ software) atm these aren't worth the money, but i think that next gen. link will enable you to record 4x from PC to sony md. (this will probably only apply to Seperates)

Atm i am building up a seperates systme (£350 or so per seperate) but i'll hold off the MD Deck till the new Sony replacment of MD940 comes out, hopefully future compatible w/ any future link to record from PC at faster than 1x.

I'll try and post some details of what's out there now that will let you do 4x recording to MD (and from what) later.

One thing: DO NOT USE MDLP. Only use MDLP2 if you have a v. long live set to record and can accept quality loss.

Also md 128kbps is better than MP3 128kbps, asumming you have same source. I personaly find that MD (which is ATRAC @ 256kbps) is better than MP3 320kbps on most music from CD source.

Sorry for going on like this but i'm just writing down what comes out of the hectic depths of my mind. and i don't have time to remove irrelivant etc stuff and make it all neat tidy and sensible.

p.s. i'll get MP3 cd once there's one thinner than 20mm.

MD uses ATRAC technology to compress sound in 1:5 ratio by eliminating noises and inaudible frequencies, preserving the dept of sounds. MiniDisc can actually sound better than a CD. MP3 cannot.
3. The various existing MD equipments, along with the removable colorful discs and labels, be can be easily individualized to show different personal styles. MP3s uses non-removable media, hard to be personalized.

blah blah blah...

Ok, 1) if you're going to be using the MD to listen to copies of your CDs or to copies of MP3s, it doesn't matter how good the sound quality on the MD can be, because it's still limited to the CD and/or MP3 that you originally got the copy from.

2) A VBR MP3 recorded via LAME --r3mix is considered "archival" quality - ie, virtually indistinguishable from the original source. Typically, an album encoded with --r3mix takes roughly 60 to 80 mb. of space, depending on the type/complexity of the music. Therefore, you can get roughly 10 full albums onto 1 80 minute CD. With a minidisc... you get what, 74 minutes at full quality? MP3 wins hands down.

3) As was mentioned before, the RioVolt line has upgradable firmware. Which means updates - so your player (in theory) won't be obsolete in 3 weeks.

4) And as to MP3s using non-removable media... we're talking about MP3 cd players. Blank CDs come in virtually every color. And they're CHEAP - unlike minidiscs. Nowadays, $20 can get you a spindle of 100 blanks.

Virtually the only reason that I can think of that you might want to choose MD is the fact that you can use them as recorders, which you can't for MP3 cd players. Some solid-state players will do it, but CD players won't. So if you want a really compact live recording device, go with a minidisc player. If you want tons of tunes to take with you wherever you go... go with the MP3 player.

And that's just my $0.02.

with a mp3 player, are you actually going to be listening to the 340 hours of music? And the battery life is far from the length of the disc. DO you want a huge hard disk that weighs 400g and doesn't even fit in you're pocket?

You can try the Philips Expanium portable MP3/CD Player, It comes with the cassette adaptor for car stereo cassette players and the AC Car Adaptor, It can play mp3s encoded from 32k to 320k Including VBR, When I first bought mines last year, It was about 199.99, Its probably a lot cheaper by now cause I bought it at Circuit City, I like MP3/CD players cause you can burn a cd that holds 700MB of mp3s and you would have like 70 something tracks to listen to which is roughly about 10 hours of music or burn a cd with like 5 or 6 live mix mp3s that would come up to 700MB or under on the CD to listen to the live sets.
