Hmm... well there are alternative explanations. But with limited knowledge of the individuals involved I'd still bet on run-of-the-mill self-esteem issues. Sometimes the most insecure people are the ones with the least reason to feel that way. |
Agreed.

It's not a matter of niceness, it's 2 things: boring vs. fun to be with, and needy vs. fun to be with. Being too nice can be interpreted as being too needy....always helping them out with everything (all the freaking time), always being with that person "just in case," etc... You just get to see too much of that person and your interest quickly dies out. Not only that, but some people might start to think that you're the stalker-type if you make it seem as if that person is the only thing in your life.
And it's not about being an asshole vs. not being an asshole, it's about being self-confident and self-assured vs. sitting on your ass and doing nothing or just being plain nervous all the time. If you see two people give a speech, same exact speech, but one person is visibly nervous while the other person is calm and relaxed, maybe even into it, which person are you going to think did a better job? It's the outward appearance that counts.
People who have an excessive amount of self-confidence are oftentimes seen as cocky, and therefore assholes. Granted, there are girls out there that really are attracted to assholes - this is usually due to a self-esteem problem of some sort. However, most normal people don't want to be treated like shit. There's a reason we have things like manners and being polite and such - a majority of people prefer them to having people be assholes. How many people truly want to be physically or emotionally abused? If the number was significantly high, the S&M industry and the like would be one of the more profitable places to be in. So if we can safely rule out the idea that people are attracted to assholes BECAUSE they are assholes, what is it that the assholes have that most others don't? Disregarding moral/ethic belief systems, how many non-assholes would even have the gumption to go up to someone and start ridiculing them? This is EXACTLY why I feel it's about self-confidence and outward appearances, and NOT how you treat people. Girls like the assholes DESPITE the fact that they're assholes, not BECAUSE of it.
