That's completely wrong! The area of Palestine was under control of the Ottoman Empire before the Zionists arrived. You don't think anyone lived in that area in cities? Like Jerusalem? The people who lived there never had a problem with the Jewish faith, as demonstrated by Jewish minority who lived there throughout the Ottoman Empire and earlier.
The concept of Zionism relies on a Jewish state, which couldn't exist in a democracy with a Muslim majority in the country. There are Muslims who live in Israel, that even serve in the Kineset, they are just not allowed to constitute a majority. This is another reason there are problems, because the birth rate is higher among the Muslim population and it threatens the Jewish majority. This is why the arab people in Palestine are not allowed to live with the Israelis. Keep in mind there are many significant religious places there to the Palestinians as well, which is part of what led to the 2nd intifada, when Sharon visited the Dome of the Rock.
Israelis should be free to live their lives and never suffer through terrorism, but the reality is that the Palestinians are not all welcome to immigrate to neighboring countries for a variety of reasons, hence they need their own state. The rationalization in the later part of your statement represents the kind of thinking that the terrorists have, by the way.
And glad you go to NYU, though I was accepted there as well, but chose to go to a different school. Oddly enough I had a former NYU professor who is an expert on this subject right when 9/11 occurred. You'd be fascinated by how much he gave us to read on how both sides share the blame.
