It still doesn't warrent suicide. I understand how much of a heirarchy Japanese society is, and the fact that they still are a bit closed off to the outside world. However, I don't believe that someone should commit suicide just because they don't fit a certain social image (or pass a test, for the purposes of this thread). I always say if you don't make it in one place, maybe the place isn't right for your needs. Try elsewhere (another country). We have a diverse world. There are no excuses for suicide (particularly the kind that we're speaking about here: succeeding in the social and corporate environment?) in this day and age.

The japanese are crazy

quote:
According to BBC news, "Japanese police have found the bodies of nine people who apparently committed suicide after meeting via special suicide sites on the internet... Japan has recently seen a wave of internet-linked suicides, as people seek companions to die with. More than 34,000 Japanese took their own lives in 2003, according to the National Police Agency - an increase of more than 7% from the previous year. A small but growing number of suicide attempts are being made by people brought together through the internet... Our correspondent says suicide has become a widely discussed topic on many websites, and there is even a guidebook to the best places to kill yourself. The authorities have talked about closing down or regulating the websites. But organisers argue that they offer a compassionate service to those who have given up all hope of the future."

There was this one fucked up Samurai dude who was guarding a point in Japan. He looked out to see a navy descending on him. He knew he could not defend his land so he went to the highest point in the land and cut himself not once, not twice, but THREE fucking times across the stomach and then 1 vertical one to show the attackers that he died for honor, not because he was afraid of pain.

THAT, is fucking badass.

There is a documented story of this Japanese fighter pilot from WWII who fought an aerial battle before flying back to the carrier. He walked up to his commander, gave his report and then collapsed. When they examined him, they found he was shot through the heart and that his body was already cold. His sense of duty was that strong.
