Thats very nice and all, but what if you get booked, and you don't have any records of that specific genre?? I don't know about you, but i'm not going to go buy a shit load of stuff I don't listen to , thats prob gonna cost me more than the pay that I'm going to get.

Why make yourself a name as a Dj for a genre that you don't like??

Ok well first of all i get payed gigs on a regular basis and i have been involved in promotion in Vancouver for over 5 years so imnot just talking out of my ass. When your at the point where promoters are paying you to play at a gig You will know what style they are promoting at their nights. I could get aproached by almost any promoter in the city and i would have a general idea of what kind of music their night plays. And to be honest if a "Dumbass promoter" came up to me and didnt know the diffrence between trance and funky house then their night is going to be so pissant that i wouldnt play anyway. With how competetive electronica nights are in Vancouver a promoter like that wouldnt be able to hold onto his night for more then a month.

Another thing, I dont know a single successful DJ here that has the versatility to genre jump to the extremes that your talking about. Thats just stupid. If I play progressive house, why the fuck would i be buying trance records? dosnt make any sense. i mean unless im a fucking hack playing ripped mp3's.

And why the hell would a promoter hire you without hearing what you play. I mean if hes looking for funky house, and my cd is prog house, he wouldnt book me anyway, unless he thinks that MY sound will go over well, in that case your good to go. Blind bookings dont happen.

If you play trance and you accept a booking to play a hip-hop night you're a fucking idiot. this original post isnt THAT bad cause its a highschool dance and your ganna have your friends around so you coulsd pull it off.

another good point, I play prog house, my demo cd's are prog house, I want prog house booking, why would i want a name as a trance dj?

There are many DJs and Producers that don't limit themselves to a single style. Just because you don't know them doesn't mean they aren't out there.

the 2 DJs i know that managed to play out in southampton never had to make demo cds to get the job. nobody gives a shit about demo cds. its not like someone is gonna sit down and listen to more than 10 seconds of it let alone the whole thing when they probably get inundated with them. if they listen to yours you can consider yourself lucky. round here it'll end up in the trash whether its good or not. they got the job because they have mates that organise skitz and various other underground events around southampton. both even admit as much. 1 of em, plays mostly hard house but he can spin and has an extensive collection of trance and hard trance too. the other one is mostly a drum and bass DJ but he spins breakbeat (slower) freeform and hardcore aswell since its about the same speed as drum and bass. thats quite a variety. hes pretty damn good too. no nonsense mixing though.

man i wasnt saying that you get gigs besed on demo cd's. I am well aware that getting a booking is 90% who you know. All i was saying is that chances are someone who is ganna book you has heard you at some point weather it be live or through a cd.

OK and just to clarify....when i talk about "genre hopping" im not talking about somthing like hardhouse to hard trance.....those 2 genres can easily go hand in hand. im talking about an example like the one Ikronix gave, the "chill breaks and funky house" one.

uhhh what about the other one? theres a big difference between breakbeat, drum and bass, freeform and hardcore and its not just to do with the average bpm. ive heard him spin freeform out of drum and bass and breakbeat out of that. its a weird combo though that doesnt always sit well with some audiences. freeform isnt very popular round here.

ya i agree with that other person who posted this, play sandstorm by darude. I guarentee that people will be dancing. I once djed my school dance and all they listened to was rap. But, during the middle I put sandstorm and everyone went straight to the dance floor. It looked like a rave. But I don't recommend playing 2 trance tracks. Just put that and that will be all. Then people will get bored and pissed off. Hope it goes well.

Scooter always works for a non-EDM crowd. And ofcourse: DJ Sammeeehhh - Heaven...

I still say that playing trance for a crowd that doesn't like it is a bad idea.

The only type i would ever play for a non-edm type crowd that doesnt like the cheesy euro-singing stuff would be things like hardtrance,because at points they do have points in the music where it soudns like rap and stuff like that. Darude is basically as popular as you can go with a rap crowd...cause tahts all they hear on games they play like dance dance revolution. Yet people play taht and theres the most CHEESIEST BS I HAVE EVER HEARD and they seem to like that. So hard trance would be my pick, but thats just my school. Prob like 80% of my school knows that i play hard trance and ive played at a dance they actually reacted very well. But thats my chool
