Are we Smokeape? Months ago the White house and pentagon were reporting a much smaller number of insurgents. If I remember right those estimates were in the 10's of thousands not 200,000 as were finding out today.
I don't find this number too surprising. We didn't go in with enough troops to secure Iraq or more importantly SEAL ITS BORDERS. Instead of adapting to the security problem at the border we're applying political pressure to Syria, Iran, and other neighbors to stop insurgents+ weapons from walking into Iraq. This is A RIDICULOUS TACTIC because it puts the responsibility in the hands of governments that don't exactly like us. The political pressure isn't doing much for us P.R. wise either.
The course of events doesn't surprise me. Before the war Dep. Def. Sec. Wolfowitz was widely known for suggesting we could win the war, stand up a gov. and start leaving in 6 MONTHS. They mixed that in with stories of Saddam possessing 500 tons of Anthrax, and other crap to make the case more urgent. Meanwhile the Army Cheif of Staff and other career Generals were screaming for more troops and armor in the battle plan but were ignored.
No surprise that yrs later our soldiers are still out there without enough armored vehicles, clinging to the hope that things will calm down after the Jan. elections. With Islamic extremism (encouraged by Osama Bin Laden of all people) and car bombs becoming popular the hope for calm is fading.
I was in my parent's house in Northern VA reading about our city's first casualty in Iraq. He was 38, died days before Christmas leaving behind a wife and 3 kids under 5yo. I've got family friends in the army and I pay I won't have to read about them in the paper.
You suggest you "Clearly see what's happening" and "We are killing the f*ck out of insurgents." We're in this mess in Iraq because the White House, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz (note these 2 never served in combat) + people like you HAVE NO CONCEPT OF REALITY.
