My only complaint with the apple powerbooks are the batterylife. but that's not made for great battery life with as big of a screen and such a small compact battery to fit the slim profile. That's what the ibook is for.

As mentioned above, stay away from compaq/hp. Try to stay away from sony. Their machines are good, but very overpriced.
My advice, go with dell. Never had a problem with dell and they always have some cool promotion going on, like free printer/digital camera, cd drive upgrade, graphics card upgrade or free shipping (desktop costs around $125 u.s. to ship).

I'm gonna put in a vote for IBM as well. I'm running a T42 and it's great. A lot of businesses choose IBM as their laptop brand of choice. They're built really well and IBM support is great(at least the support plan I have). It also has this nice hard drive protection feature which prevents you from messing up your hard drive if you drop the laptop. If you are concerned about size/weight, the T series is also good. They're pretty light and thin. I've played with some dell laptops and although the screen might be bigger, the whole thing was thicker and wider and heavier. The only thing about the T series that's kind of disappointing is the lack of ports. No serial port, rca video out(s-video is there but you'll need an adapter for older TV's), firewire, or PS/2. I guess the best advice is to compare different laptops and see what fits you best.

The most powerful laptops out there would be the "Alien Ware" brand laptops. VERY expensive!
I think Compaq would be my 1st choice .But I deffenetly now what never to buy , and that is an IBM or a Toshiba ....They SUCK !!! and i talk from experience!
