i never would have thought colorado would have a big edm scene. i talked to a guy one time who gets small time gigs in south beach and he said all the DJ's here are asshole haters. no one is willing to help you out or introduce you. that's where your contacts/personality come into handy. sadly enough, it's more about who you know, not what you know. |
You're absolutely right. I learned very fast and believe that I was gifted with an ear. Friends who started before me were perplexed by my growth. My friend that already gets some ok gigs seems to have the same natural ability. I have never tried teaching someone and had them pick it up so easily. He already uses tricks that I use, without me even telling him. He just watches and takes note of it. Sometimes he doesn't do it right, but we can't expect too much.
As far as contacts go, djs will seldom get you anywhere. Everyone is always so afraid of having their thunder stolen, that they rarely help each other. I try to help people get gigs, but I'm in the minority. Who you know is very important, but you have to have some ability, if they are knowledgeable. The good promoters won't book you, if they don't think you're ready. I am not taking a chance of weakening my reputation as a promoter by booking a subpar dj. But if a dj proves that they are worthy, they will get an opportunity, given the right attitude.
