i started a trance dj at the beginning of last year but that was already when trance was heading to a downward spiral. hunting down the classics was impossible cause most were out of print. im into chugging, techy and slightly dubby/melodic house music now.

started using ableton live these past couple of days.

got tons of loops from parents 70's and 80's vinyl looping with some random beats ive made its all very fun to trigger it using a midi keyboard making a new track every time then mix in a vinyl or cd live.

what im trying to say is ableton live rocks!

I started spinng progressive trance with some anthems. I didnt keep that style very long. I got very tired of hearing the same 7 tracks being spun by every dj. I was at a massive once and I heard delerium - silence spun by 6 djs, and in two rooms at the same time. I evolved to psy trance and dark trance. I'm currently getting into techno and funky tech house.

i think trance in general is the type of EDM most people get into first, and then slowly move into prog, house, tribal, techno, etc...
almost everyone i know that listens to edm does this....

Trance doesn't have the same subliminal value to me that it did as early as 2002. I play everything from percussive breaks to melodic tech house, so I guess you could say that the most interesting (and challenging) part of being a DJ to me is reinventing myself.

Well for me I started with House music, then in about early 1997 went to Trance with some Hard Trance and House splashed here and there, but alot of trance to me is sounding the same these days, there are still great tracks being made, but they are very hard to find in among the crap, but it makes for some gooood crate digging, I have always had a love for breaks, especially in Trance so over the last 6 months I been thinking and searching for good breaks and have been incorporating them into my sets over the last few months, I love trance but theres only so much you can do with them apart from going back and forth vinyl to vinyl, Breaks allows me to really mess with the music and get involved in what I want it to sound like, this is why I want a CDJ, to include Edits/Remixes of certain tracks that I've added my style to, and I have also been messing with Ableton Live for some time now, will be including that into my sets in the next few months.

Just thought of this too... lately I've really been enjoying taking tracks from modern jazz artists (Medeski, Martin, & Wood/Kyoto Jazz Massive) and pitching them up a bit to run them around the 128-135BPM category and using them as intro tracks for sets.

I know there is a whole genre of "Acid Jazz" out there that is basically meant for DJ's, but I think it's a lot of fun to check out even some of the classics... I'm thinking about trying to produce a track using the vocals from the Sarah Vaughan version of "Summertime" somewhat in the vein of the "Verve: Remixed" release, but with a bit more of a progressive/trance feel to it.

Just in the "things I'm thinking about" phase now... Cheers,

RJT

From around the age of 5-8 i had been to a few raves along with my dad while he was working, being so young while sitting back stage the music ment nothing and to me it was just some constant thumping noise and the dj was just some guy with wierd black round things standing at a table. Wen i was about 8 my dad finished working in that industry and at that time i didnt even have a taste in music. But then a few years later when i was hearing some trance again from flicking through radio stations i feel in love instantly. Since then iv ben into trance. i started djing a year ago and since then iv gotten into breaks and most types of house aswell and ifluence from friends and such has gotten me to tolerate rnb, hip-hop, punk rock. Trance has meaning and emotion and thats what i like about it. Say something has happend and im in a pissu mood i can never get enough of realy hard trance or if im just chillin out i play some progy slow kinda trance. Iv been a little sleep deprived lately so i hope that all makes sense (damn one month school camp)

What people got into first just depends on what was big at the time in most cases. Then after that people tend to evolve and find their own way and eventually will make their own interpretation of a scene and if enough people agree with it they will come and see you and you will get a name for yourself.

Cheers
Nem
