yes, while i understand sax an j_spot, i dont think im as extreme as them...just overly rational... its just going to be VERY difficult to cure these things. i hear people talking about how the US govt created AIDS and that they have the cure, but wont give it to us...this is total conspiracy theory. the truth is, that viruses and cancers alter the DNA of the person they affect, and because of this a cure will be nearly impossible as viruses and cancers mutate. this i what i understand about disease, but i dont feel like running around infecting people with something just so things are better for those who survive, because at the same time the world would lose something too, just beyond numbers of people...late/

mr_sax: you don't have to do anything to it. Just download, install and let it run in the background (Putting on the screensaver is not necessary to make it do work).

I understand the reasoning behind supporting the natural order of the world, and that diseases keep the population from exploding (especially for First World countries that devastate global resources and the environment), but in my opinion there is no need to be concerned about the cure for such diseases.

I agree with biznology - the cure for cancer is a long way from now.. I mean all these fuckin lotteries on TV like the Princess Margaret Hospital Cure for Cancer Lottery does shit for research ($10 mil won't cure cancer by the next day) and the money can be spent on more worthwhile campaigns.. however, if research is done at a steady pace (as it is in universities, hospitals, etc.), I believe that the cure for some of these deadly diseases will coincide with the discovery of solutions to population growth, food sources, and other world issues. (F@H does medical research for "free", which is surely a good reason as to why I support it)

By the way, research in protein folding benefits many fields other than cancer research: (from Website)
quote:
...Diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, CJD (Mad Cow disease), an inherited form of emphysema, and many cancers...

If I were against this kind of research to keep the population in control and let the world operate naturally, I would have to be against the practice of medicine altogether. No doctors, surgeons, anything... just survival of the fittest. If I come up with a bad case of the flu, I guess I can start sending farewells to my friends and family...

I just think it's very sad for people (especially those that are close to you) that lead great lives and are generally good-hearted people suddenly meet some misfortune, then bang.. they're in bed, suffering, soon to be dead... knowing that research is being done to avoid this, is, in my opinion, more comforting...

in any case, I totally understand if you have a different viewpoint..

Well, cancer was actually not as prevalent in the past because people never lived long enough to get it. People mostly dies of infection. Acording to our size we should only be living 25-30 years but all this new technology has made us live unnatually long. so now we have the next obsticle to overcome, cancer. i mean the human race is programmed to try to live as long as possible. But seriously, there will be something new to cure later on anyways.
i still think that research is important. Gives people hope.
