The main problem with MSN vs ICQ is that on MSN ppl seem to be 'expecting' a response right away simply because your status is 'Online'. When you don't answer in a timely fashion the n00bs will accuse you of ignoring them.
This was never an issue on ICQ - but, then again, not many n00bs used ICQ either.
I need to find a new word for n00bs
I agree it seems to be a generational thing here. Newer users of IM seem to be waiting on the edge of their seats for a response; MSN even tells the receiving client when the sender is typing back a message (I find this somewhat annoying). I usually treat IM the way I treat email: I always have a window open and I quickly parse the subject lines for important/urgent messages, however I will only reply when I have the time to do so.
This was never really an issue on IRC either (IRC predating IM). BitchX queues up my pvt messages and I'll reply to them when I get a chance. If it's urgent then call my cell phone, kthx!
True real time chat takes the cooperation of *both* parties.

Holy crap I still have my UIN in my profile.
9812050.
Wow, old school.
Last time I used ICQ though, I got assaulted by spam-bots.

ICQ taught me that for every white guy, there is an Asian girl.
