it's not about getting ME involved you idiot, it's about our people!

and this isn't the first time you've done this either... you're just giving the people wrong image of our country, and even if only a couple of people may read it, it still pisses me off!

if you've got something to say, thats fine, SAY IT, just don't speak on behalf of everyone!

OK... is this Forum for real?
ARe you people ACTUALLY posting your real opnions or is this some lame attempt by some people who have done far too many drugs and have too much time on their hands to spark some controversy?

Honestly, the year IS 2005, times are changing, AND we live in a country fortunatley NOT run by religion. Gay marriage will soon be a fact, it will not affect the rest of marriage as it is known and the straight people of this country have nothing to worry about. (yes even you closet cases, don't worry, you can still hide behind your homophobia).

I for one am proud to be part of a country that is so progressive and becoming less an less like the U.S.A.

AND

I will be overjoyed when I marry my boyfriend, just so that I can stick it in the faces of ALL of you repressed rednecks who think that your opinion counts for anything.

deal with it... and if people create an image of a whole country/certain people based on one man's opinions and comments, well then, boo-fucken-hoo. they should know better than that.

if my posts sounded like me speaking for "my people", i sure was... for a certain portion of them. for the portion of our population that was actually raised with certain values and principles, as good or bad/right or wrong those might have been. love it or hate it, that's how some of us have been raised, and that's how some of us feel.

sure, by spending the last few years in this country in a totally different environment and set of social values i've grown to accept some of these, but there still is a certain line to be drawn. i know for a fact that gays have their own radio station in Serbia, just to "give people more realistic image of the country", but the general public still doesn't approve of them as much as they do here in Canada. It's one thing to broadcast your opinions on a radio station that you have a choice of ignoring and not listening, but it's a totally different thing parading in someone's neighbourhood and showing off your "pride".

I'll say it again, Marriage is a religious sacrament that the state decides to recognize as a legal entity. They have no right to hijack it and destroy our religious foundations

If anything, give them their 'legal union' but keep it quiet and STFU about it. Whats next, they will grant them rights to adopt.

^^^ my point exactly.

Let me ask you this,

Do you think you should be able to marry or do you think that a civil union would be more appropriate?

Explain why marriage and not civil union.

see, as much as I respect you for not trying to affect the foundations of marriage as it has been laid out thousands of years ago, why do you have to "stick it in" somebody else's face? i thought people marry out of love, not out of spite and to show off/stick it to others... that's the problem I have with the issue of gay marriage. love/fuck/spend time with whoever the hell you want to spend time with (just stick to humans for now, no sheep and nasty stuff like that), get "married" if you want to without pissing off the rest of the population (call it some other name, a union of whatever), and just go on with your life without trying to stick it to everyone else. we really don't need to see more straight people getting married just to stick it to all the gays... i'm sure divorce lawyers would be happy about this one tho (with all the broken marriages, kids left without a parent, etc).

as far as the homophobia goes, i don't think you can really call it that... phobias are based on fear, and i'm not sure that the feelings I and most people I know have are homophobic (we're not afraid of gay people, and why would we? unless you start killing the straight people on a massive scale or something). sometimes it's just some sort of a discomfort and disguist with your actions... so really, be happy with the freedoms that you have right now, since that is a lot more than other countries allow and accept. and don't go around "sticking it up" to people, it might backfire on you.

^^^

but the same question could be reversed...why not marriage? why does it need to be called something different?

Saying that the "traditional" definition of marriage refers to a man and woman...true, but so what? Traditions change over time...at one time, it was "tradition" (and law) that women were not allowed vote, for example...that changed, and so our definition of "eligble voter" changed to accomodate that change.

I find that example to be sufficient to allow for changing the traditional definition of marriage to accomodate gays who wish to marry. We didn't require a separate "classification" for women when they were granted the right to vote...we just included them with the status quo group of eligible voters...so why should that be different now?

for those saying marriage is a religious sacrament...sorry, in this debate, it is NOT...marriage MUST be recognized by the state for it to be binding...so religion plays no part in this debate from a LEGAL standpoint.

12 Reasons why Gay Marriage will Ruin Society

1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control are not natural.

2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people cannot get legally married because the world needs more children.

3. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children because straight parents only raise straight children.

4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful, since Britney Spears's 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

5. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and it hasn't changed at all: women are property, Blacks can't marry Whites, and divorce is illegal.

6. Gay marriage should be decided by the people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of minorities.

7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are always imposed on the entire country. That's why we only have one religion in America.

8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people makes you tall.

9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage license.

10. Children can never succeed without both male and female role models at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to cars or longer lifespans.

12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages will for gays & lesbians.

Everyone needs to relax and just allow the gays to be as miserable as the rest of society. I say give em a 10 year trial period, after which i'm predicting 90% of them will be fed up with the headaches that is marriage/divorce/alimony/child support(?) and they'll be begging us for the freedom they previously enjoyed.

Or not...

Either way, it really won't affect the way we live our lives so why spend time debating it ?

Meh...
