most people dont even take into account the maintainance cost per year, plus tires, oil changes, it can really add up.

ive done the math a million times, and for me public transit is still cheaper

If you're taking it anywhere downtown, add the costs of parking the damn thing on too!

no doubt that it's cheaper...and convenient...but I just think that service has deteriorated lately while the prices and funding continues to increase. Something doesn't add up and the IMO the system is missmanaged.

For sure!

What pisses me off is people who complain about the fare hikes.
1) If you ride the TTC daily, you should have a metropass (if you don't you are a moron). Therefore, rate hikes on individual fares will not affect you.
2) If you don't ride the TTC yet insist on complaining about fare hikes... STFU!

My car costs me $500 a month all in all (insurance, payments, gas)not inc repairs. I estimate to travel downton and back 5 times a week as well as do my daily chores it would cost me roughly $400 a month in transit fares. Thats $75 for the oakville transit. About $200 for GO trains and $98 for a TTC pass. Thats not including the times i would probably say "fuggit" and just take a cab.

So for $100 more per month i have the convenience of short trip times, my own personal space, and something to show for my investment.

Transit is just not worth it in many cases.

I use tokens. I dont use the TTC daily, but I do use it enough to purchase the tokens...It pissed me off just before the fare hike when I couldnt buy them 10 at a time. I also use YRT daily, so thats basically 4.75 a day - ONE WAY to get to the city

TTC is only good if you're taking the subway to go downtown really...it's still cheaper BUT...and here's the big big BUT.

I take the TTC to work every morning and now i work in Scarborough. It takes me 2 subways and 2 busses to get to where I need to...overall it takes about an hour to get TO work and even longer to get back home.

Last week my mom left to Israel to visit my grandparents after my grandfather had a surgery and she left me tha car so natually now I'm taking the 401 to work. Even if the traffic isn't the best it takes me about 25 minutes or so to get to work...

25 minutes vs 1 hour or sometimes long to be stuck in a bus full of people in rush hour and i'll be honest with you some need better personal hygene lessons!

So unless you're taking the subway downtown I don't know it's debatable, but still cheaper.

+ insurance, + gas, + regular maintenance, + unforseen repairs, + plate stickers, etc

I agree that TTC workers are paid VERY well...a bus driver, under age 30 (so not a long-term employee in a high wage grid) who works healthy OT can make *70k/year* (I've seen the T4s from clients to prove it). That's not to say they don't deserve to be paid well...but I don't think they deserve more than what they get now for what amounts to reasonably unskilled labour...I'm not saying their job is easy...but they're paid well enough, IMHO.

I don't buy the "I know people with a degree" comparison that someone else made...that's completely irrelevant in many (if not most) cases.

A degree represents an education...not necessarily job training or a ticket to a fat paycheque. There are people with Masters degrees working in call centres. I know someone doing their PhD in English...their career options are far from guaranteed (and they know that...and are are doing the degree because they want to, not because they are anticipating a six figure salary the moment they graduate).

Another fare hike is out of the question...ridership will plumett. The TTC needs to be better subsidized by the various levels of gov't...especially as traffic congestion becomes worse and worse.

Yea if you live in OAKVILLE...

TTC is for toronto, you can't lump in Oakville transit and GO into this discussion.

Car is by all means the best mode of transportation for people living outside the actual city of toronto.

Not to be mean but what exactly do you expect? You don't live in Toronto proper, so why do you expect that you should be able to get there for less than $4.75 (the cost of YRT+TTC)?

Either way, you can still by tokens/tickets on discount.
