A couple things:
First: I love Miami. I love the beach. I love the bars. I am not suggesting that Miami as a party destination needs to be disrespected.
However, I fly into Miami to attend WMC. I register as a delegate and attend what is intended to be an industry event. The whole purpose of this is to showcase EDM to people who make, produce and otherwise earn their loving from the scene.
When these showcases are shut down by authorities who don't seem to care about the millions of $ and prestige it brings in, That affects me personally - and the reason why I attend the event (and quite frankly why the event occurs at all.)
I understand that some people are "tourists" who just want to party.. I think that's great and probably makes for a better week. But, if we lose the original goal, fewer parties will take place, the industry guys and their money will slowly stop coming, and by necessity, it will move somewhere else - either by choice or circumstance.
Miami is great, but if they can't or won't stand up for the conference side of WMC - and the reason why they are gettign this windfall of tourist bucks, then it's time to move.

your right .. we'll be back.. but if they moved it to vegas.. we'd be there.. or wherever they moved it.. i think they should let the city of miami decide... give them an ultimatum.. allow the parties during that week. or we will take our 60,000+ tourists to the city of our choice. if miami says no.. then we go

Definitely couldn't agree more, although I do like Miami - it's just not friendly to the WMC scene. I came down here yesterday for the weekend and to enjoy being with friends who were attending the conference but I've never seen such shoddy reception for people who've planned for this a long time and have $$ to spend. I'm thinking Atlanta or NYC for a new venue. Sure beats the fascist police state atmosphere you get here. |
Like it or not, Miami is pretty much a perfect location for this kind of event in March...
Weather is perfect, people are generally friendly and hot , lots of places to party, easy to get to from many places in USA and world. Esp. for Europeans that come over, it is still too early for Meditranian Summer... It is also close to Europe and South America. Relatively short flights from most EDM spots around the world. You have to remember that huge % of people come from Europe and even larger % of industry people come from there.
NYC is 1. too cold. 2. even more anal police than Miami-Dade. WMC, i believe started in NYC and it didn't last too long... And believe me, i live hell of a lot closer to NYC than Miami
Vegas is also not as good. It is far too small of city, it can still be VERY cold in Nevada in March(desert temps at night drop to 40s and lower), no beaches, not many clubs either. And it is god knows where. The only place close to it is LA. Eurpope is 2-3 leg 20 hour flights.... You think there will be good attendance?
Problem with Miami is 20 years... whenever something runs this long, there will be issues that get worse over years....
But frankly, Miami is one of the most friendly EDM places in USA... (East Coast anyway)
