Before leaving the country, purchase two religious figures, both have to be identical and both have to be hollowed out.
Open one of these and fill it with any substance. Now going to the airport take the substance filled statue, and find a lovely old couple who is about to fly back home. Give them the statue with a big smile (Say its a gift and customary to receive it)

They will love it and treasure it, bringing it over the border for you. Now once they've passed through customs, take out the other identical statue. Proceed to ask them if you could have a look at the statue because you needed to see some serial number (or any reasonable excuse will work).
