BTW, I am aware that they don't actually fit the definition in a musically perfect way, which is why I mainly used it in the more general sense.

While I'm not one for arguing over genres, as genre classifications are something everybody is never going to agree on, I just listened to some "Rimini Project" out of curiosity and I'd have to agree that this is very far from ambient.

Which songs did you hear? Not all of their music is atmospheric.

Perhaps you shouldn't read that ambient definition of yours that literally? Because if it's to be interpreted as you do every tune is ambient, because every tune can be atmospheric in some way. But I concede the fact that persuading you to realize you're wrong is hopeless, therefore I give up.
