$2k for a diamond ring is really cheap. the guy who posted that an average is $3500-$4000 sounds pretty low to me too. the girl is going to wear this all the time for the rest of her life (you hope). you want her to be proud of it and show it off to everyone.

but on a serious note, just shop around and haggle. you really shouldn't pay an arm and a leg for an engagement ring

never could understand this. if you can't tell the difference without taking it to a jeweler then whats the big deal? If you want to impress ppl, a large cz is going to be better than a tiny real diamond.
