Agree with the community thing. That was the focus, cuz, lets be honest, they still spoke the thing in Latin until fairly recently. The priests are the messengers of God, which is why you have to Confess to them, cuz they are the only ones that know how to communicate.

Also, when someone dies, everyone has to pray them out of Purgatory, so you better be well known in your church if you want to go to Heaven lol.

Jesus told st. Peter to be the next leader after him and later there will be next one, and the next one until Jesus returns to judge the living and the dead.

I can tell you that Catholics, in the states fall into the category I mentioned.

And, even though he told Peter to be a leader, did he tell him that he was a better man than any other man? I think not. Why is the pope any closer to God than anyone else? A leader maybe, a more godly man, I doubt it. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of god".

Well the power behind the decision most certainly was mostly white

Seriously though the new pope wasn't a nazi, his dad got his ass kicked for being so anti-nazi actually pretty fucking tough to do then btw.

I do see it as a missed opertunity though, a non white pope would have brought the world forward.

actually... the word Petros was "rock" or foundation and God had said the rule of the church and said on this foundation shall the church be built on. They took that to mean Peter was the first Pope, but contemporary belief is that they were trying to say "this is what its all about, so use this is as the foundation of your belief"

christianity specifically with regard to the New Testament...and Old if you read it...was supposed to be no places of worship, no running around with arms in the air shouting that youre a christian. It was all supposed to be a new kind of religion where you travelled and Witnessed to people and did good deeds...

how far have we fallen...again

I don't know why people keep comparing the Pope to a politician. Granted there are similarities, but the whole concept is completely different. One is supposed to lead a country, the other is supposed to lead all people to God. I just don't buy into it one bit. I heard the argument about gold and glamour glorifying God, but that's a crock. The bible speaks of humility everywhere. How is erecting gold statues and drapping officials in excessive garments honoring God? It's attracting attention to those men, rather than God. That's my issue. I believe Church is very important and should be attended. Not because you have to be there to pray though, but, because it is a place to gather with other believers and encourage and support each other. Matthew also states, quoting Jesus, that one shouldn't pray in the streets and in the synagogues, but, rather, lock oneself away and do it to honor God, not to be noticed by men. The idea that is pushed by the Catholic church, that one must be in the "house of God" to pray seems absurd to me, under this context. I hope I'm misunderstanding the Catholic faith, truly, but I believe there is an overemphasis of Church, for the wrong reasons. And, obviously, those people then support the Church with more money. Again, giving money to your Church is good, but the Catholic Church isn't about getting by, it's about gaining momentous wealth. That's my problem with it.

i think st. peter's original name was simon... and you're right about the origins of st. peter's papal name, that jesus called him the foundation of his church.

Heh you think you're confused now? Read "The Grand Inquisitor" chapter from Dostoyevski's Brothers Karamazov. Now THAT is a right proper mindfuck.
