I don't know why people keep comparing the Pope to a politician. Granted there are similarities, but the whole concept is completely different. One is supposed to lead a country, the other is supposed to lead all people to God. I just don't buy into it one bit. I heard the argument about gold and glamour glorifying God, but that's a crock. The bible speaks of humility everywhere. How is erecting gold statues and drapping officials in excessive garments honoring God? It's attracting attention to those men, rather than God. That's my issue. I believe Church is very important and should be attended. Not because you have to be there to pray though, but, because it is a place to gather with other believers and encourage and support each other. Matthew also states, quoting Jesus, that one shouldn't pray in the streets and in the synagogues, but, rather, lock oneself away and do it to honor God, not to be noticed by men. The idea that is pushed by the Catholic church, that one must be in the "house of God" to pray seems absurd to me, under this context. I hope I'm misunderstanding the Catholic faith, truly, but I believe there is an overemphasis of Church, for the wrong reasons. And, obviously, those people then support the Church with more money. Again, giving money to your Church is good, but the Catholic Church isn't about getting by, it's about gaining momentous wealth. That's my problem with it.

Heh you think you're confused now? Read "The Grand Inquisitor" chapter from Dostoyevski's Brothers Karamazov. Now THAT is a right proper mindfuck.
