Firstly, your use of big words makes you sound like an asshole; and I did read the whole thing. Secondly, you make the assumption that the people who hate trance have no idea what they are talking about. This is incorrect. I found my introduction to electronic music through trance, and was pretty into it for a while. I have since come to rescind that opinion and changed my view to the idea that trance has been complete shit since roughly when Children came out. Thusly, I have listened to trance, extensively, and still think that it is shit.

Also, your mention of trance lacking a cult-of-personality syndrome is completely shit. Tiesto, Armin, Ferry, PvD; these people might as well be worshipped, people follow them blindly. I do not think that you can deny this point, for if you do, I will fucking bury you with forum search results.

Finally, you make claim that trance is strongly emotional. I disagree here also. Trance is electronic music: it is made by machines. It has no more inherent emotion than minimal techno, drum and bass, or happy hardcore.

So, next time you try to sound intelligent, I suggest you make claims with some basis, and I suggest that you don't contradict yourself in your "defence," as several prior posters have pointed out. Music is music, and therefore is highly subjective. Don't try to make yourself superior through what you listen to.

Thank you all for your replies, some witty, some reverent, some irrelevant. Others such as twoplow miss the point altogether. Please learn how to write English before you insult my use of language two plow with your archaic and pretentious use of the word “thusly”, not to mention your horrible grammar.

The point of the piece was not to insult other people’s tastes as there are fewer things more subjective than music, but it was to reveal how inadequate people’s conceptions of trance actually are. Twoplow may be knowledgeable about trance and he is perfectly entitled to hate it, but it is unclear why someone like him is conversing on a tranceaddict forum! My target audience relates to people who do not really know what trance is

I would agree that there are indeed people who mindlessly worship people like Tiesto, but what should be noted is that I wrote that trance “in its purest sense” would ignore such activity, meaning that a true trance fan should be loyalty blind. NB. This was a “defence of trance” piece.

Defence and defense are perfectly acceptable for those semantic screwballs but I as an Englishman I prefer the former.

Excellent post tranc3 – I agree with your views on the emotive potential of trance.

Each day a new track is released it amazes me, they are all classed as the same genre but all sound so different!

totally agree. in my 'quest' to analyze the meaning of music, i have come across similar thoughts, but in the end i realized all of the philosophical implications that can be inferred from trance music is a case of existence preceeding meaning. In other words, all of this essence rtgbanks seems to find in trance is his own mind trying to make since of things.

trying to convince people to listen to trance, or good-trance, if they are by nature close minded in this kind of matter is pointless. i quickly realized this when on once occaison i wanted to play some pure prog., at a friends party. Surely most everyone hated it, but then I said it was Tiesto and they were jamming the whole night.

Because it gets highly frustrating when people who listen to EDM are the most criticized for our listening preference. It's not about changing their minds, but getting them to realize that we don't have bad taste in music. I hate it when my friends tell me that EDM is shit because it is a bunch of random bleepy noises. Ya, I happen to like those bleepy noises, that's basic essence of "Electronic Music," and those bleepy noises are all pretty much arranged in some sort of sequence to create a rythem or a melody, so no, it is not random. Also, it is easy to criticize something when your opinion is swayed with the majority. The opinion of the majority seems to take over any rationalality of opinion of the minority. This is human nature, and that is why I hate people so godamn much.
