My niece is breaking up with her boyfriend of four years, and is finding it hard, too!

Always remember you have friends to talk to, and that you'll have good days and bad days. Keep busy, and do positive things like exercising. Remember why you're not together when you're lonely, as it will be hard to not call! A temporary separation is best, as feelings always come up when you talk/see someone you've been close to.

Hope you're feeling better!

If all else fails turn to Drugs and Alcohol....it worked wonders for me.

Only a temporary bandaid. Better to feel everything you need to, rather than mask it with durgs and incohol and suffer through the feelings of withdrawl and lonliness all at once!

Agreed.

My ex of almost 5 years..we remained good friends for a good chunk of time (about a year and a half) after we broke up. I thought I was that 1 in a 100 that could actually make the friendship work. Well he has a new girlfriend now and told me over the weekend that he wants me "completely out of his life." Even though I did the inital breaking up over a year and a half ago - when he said that it honestly hurt MORE than when we actually broke up.

Don't try and be friends. Venture out into different circles and explore other options. Enjoy being single. Realize that the relationship was an experience that you will inevitably learn from but don't dwell on it. It sounds horrible and harsh to say that now but in the long run you will be the better person for it. Listen to good music, surround yourself with good people, party in the sunshine..summer is great to be single.

This weekend marked an end of a relationship I have been in for quite a long time with someone I care about deeply.. but yet we've decided that there is no future.

At this point, I can't remember the last time I was this miserable.. maybe you can offer some tips for getting over this rough time..

My only piece of advice is, if you see something that made you both happy, remember it as only that, something that brought joy to your life, knowing that he was a part of your life for so long, can only make you truely appriciate him, not sadness for he is no longer there, God truely wants us to meet everyone we do for a reason, maybe that reason isn't clear yet, but it will be. Have strength .

Thanks to everyone.. there's some really good advice in this thread and I appreciate you sharing your experiences as well.

There will certainly highs and lows but today I am starting to feel better

And I can't wait for the next big party so I can get all crazy and release all these emotions..

I'm even thinking of making a shirt for the Tiesto event that says "Hi Tiesto, I'm single now"

Seriously, though, Adrenalina...my dear fellow Tiesto lover...I find that just cranking up your favorite trance beats really soothes when you feel like shit...I'm sure you've already done that (unless Tiesto reminds you of him...that would really suck then)

Music/movies/sports anything that keeps you occupied so you can get him out of your mind.

I hope you had closure, though, because that was the one thing that hovered over me for the longest time after my terrible break up. I mailed her everything she had ever bought me, all our pictures, ANYTHING that reminded me of her. Just purolated that box of nightmares to her WORKPLACE to try and embarass her just the way she totally made me look like a loser dumbass the way she dumped me...but despite my trying to be aggressive about it, she haunted my thoughts for so long because we never really had a "rational" closure, of her acknowledging how I felt and vice-versa.

Hope yours ended in the best way it possibly could.

Releasing emotions at big parties rules!!!

And the t-shirt is an AWESOME idea LOL although I doubt a cutie like you would last in the market too long!

I'm actually piggy-backing off of iLLnAda's creativity; she's coming up with some cool threads for Tiesto and I'll try and get a t-shirt for myself!!!

I've got such a good story for you...

So yesterday I get this e-mail from my ex (ex of 3+ years) with an up date of his life and pictures of him and his new girlfriend..

It's so awesome to see him smile and be incredibly happy and his new g/f is absolutely gorgeous!

It took me YEARS to get over him, but what I've realized is, we're two totally different people and want very different things out of life. He taught me so much and I'll never forget him. I have memories and that's really all I need.

I think at the end of the day you have to remember there are simply millions of other fish in the sea and probably another 40 years to sample them
