EDIT
so this 'crossover cable' connects directly to the motherboards of both computers and acts generally as a newtork without having to do all the messy annying setup XP likes to put me thru?

No, cross-over cable connects two network cards together.

Maybe this is a solution:

The crossover cable allows you to connect two PC's without any other hardware. You just have to enable File and Print sharing on both computers, and use the Win XP Network Setup Wizard.

File transfers are relatively fast between the two computers using Windows Explorer.

You should be able to network them, but if you can't, there are two very good alternatives:

1. Serial ATA to Parallel ATA adapter

2. A USB drive enclosure with Serial ATA, like this one - you can stick the hard drive from your new computer into this, plug it into the old one through USB, and copy your files.

If you go with #2 make sure it is actually a USB interface and supports SATA drives. It's a little more expensive than option #1, but the good thing is that you can put any hard drive into it and have a portable hard drive (MUCH cheaper than actually buying an external USB/FireWire drive).
