Even though Oakey helped launch trance into the mainsteam, I think he did it the right way. The reason for me saying this being, that he didn't really spin cheesy mainstream music at all. He actually pulled off making GOOD music popular and for that I seriously respect Paul Oakenfold. |
Me as well. If it weren't for him I would never have heard of trance, I'd have still been listening to nu metal crap.
He's fallen, but so have pink floyd, metallica and a lot of great musicians. You don't see people saying "man, pink floyd suck, they're last album was crap" They say holy shit darkside is a trip. Quite a few people dislike metallica's last albums, but they still haven't lost respect for the guys who made One and Enter sandman.
That's what I'll figure for Tiesto and Oakie and such. I used be one who hated Tiesto, but not any more, Cuz I go back, listen to all those pre 2000 Gatecrasher sets and fall in love with him and Oakie again.
A shitty performance gets lost in history, but a great performance is legendary.
I mean a lot of people hate stuff when it gets popular. Which is pretty lame. I guess those people want to feel special, like they're the only ones listening to good music. So they hate popular stuff, cuz everyone listens, and listen to stuff very few people listen to, just cuz its unpopular.

I've ony seen him once and while I wasnt particularly impressed, I wasnt horribly offended either. His set was about 1/3 trance, 1/3 boring as shite prog and 1/3 gay house remixes of rock and or 80s tunes. From what I hear, this is pretty standard for for the guy.
What can I say? The kiddies loved it and so did the bouncers... |
Exactly. Get extremely famous and no matter how bad you are, kiddies will love you. I saw Oakey and he was absolutely horrid. I stood there most of the time in shock at how so many people were dancing like it was the greatest thing they've ever heard while chanting, "Oakey! Oakey!" It's not going to end with Tijs. The next person to hit number one will act the same (it's already starting with Armin, but that's another rant), and the person after will be the same, as well.
It's sad what fame and money will do to people who have the ability to be innovative, yet decide to cash-in and not risk losing their place.
