I used to be a vinyl purist and didn't enjoy spinning on anything but it, but CDs have gradually grown on me, to the point now where I'd rather play a set entirely off of CD than off of vinyl. With the CDJ800s or 1000s (have yet to try the new technics or anything, but the same argument applies), I can have the beats locked down in like, 20 seconds, leaving me a hell of a lot more time to think about programming and interact with the crowd.

I bought Ableton Live last weekend because I feel it's definitely the wave of the future; you can do so much more with that program than just mix seemlessly. IMO, seemless mixing is the easy part of DJ'ing, and frankly that's all Traktor DJ Studio does for you, so it's wank IMO for anything other than creating personal mixes with your MP3 collection and I'd be somewhat disappointed to see someone using it to auto-beatmatch crap at the club.

As others have pointed out though, seeing a DJ live is 99% about what they play and how they interract with the crowd, so if some dude can deliver mindblowing sets and get the crowd hyped with Traktor, then grats him. I'd also tell that same DJ to give up his bushleague software and buy a couple of CDJs so he can get the credibility he deserves.

I love dj's who integrate such hardware

it just has to be used with moderation

a dj who would only play with a computer would be kinda lame

if it is part of the equipment to enhance the performance then its all good

and for home use final scratch is just perfect

lot of money saved on vynil and same feel as vynil

With vinyls you can play alot faster. You can drop a needle at any point of a track in an instant. But beyond that, it's a standard. When you come to a club to play, you never have a problem with vinyl, but lets agree on one thing, cd players all do similar job but controls, response and precision varies from model to model and sometimes you have to spend couple of minutes just to get used to the damn thing.

it all depends. i think. traktor can be used to mix. it does have a button to auto synch but you dont have to use it and just beatmatch manually. its like the mixers that have the bpm counters. it shows the bpm´s of the vinyls. you just pitch them so its the same. i think its the same thing, just different methods. its what you do with the tools what puts you above the rest.

for many its track selections. fortunatley im into a genere where track selections and skills are very important. techno. 3 decks, effects, etc.

i have never seen a dj actually mix in a club with traktor.

but NO BEATMATCHING... just putting tracks one after the other without no work.. no respect
i can beatmatch..

and i use traktor. so doesnt mean i cant do it. plus thre is some skill to it. specially if ur not using a mixer hookedup to the comp but just by using the eq on the comp with mouse/keys

its funny how the argument has evolved
from vinyl VS Cds to
vinyl+cds VS laptops + ableton + FS
it all comes down to the music in the end, however u get there, each has its drawbacks vinyl is costly and the quality of the acetate is fragile and could diminish over time, plus i dont see having 2000 songs on your laptop a bad thing, if the crowd aint feelin the vibe u got the room to switch it up. i remember reading a article on how the original drum machine was so opposed because it made the drummer and the drum kit obsolete. its the same with beatmatching. ableton rocks peace out

Mixing is not important. Yeah, it's easy to use programs that'll beatmatch for you, but it's also easy to beatmatch. Took me what - one week to pick it up? Thing is, DJing is about doing a ton of little things that anyone can do. It's about being a good jack-of-all-trades. Nothing a DJ does is really hard when considered individually, and that includes beatmatching. So the DJ can use whatever he wants for all I care.

It's about what's coming out of the fucking speakers!

Im sorry to pop anyones bubble but beatmatching doesnt really take talent.
It takes practice.

Production is a diffrent story. Composing music does imply being gifted on a certain scale.

Seeing an artist interpreting their composed music is one thing, seeing a dj interpreting different artists works is another.

the buttom line is it doesnt really matter what means a disc jockey uses to interpret music - as long as it conforms with the original's artists creation and does not alter it (unless authorized).

lets not forget that at the end of the day - your job comes down to putting one track after the other to make pple smile.
If you can acheive this with ableton, traktor or atomix - good for you.

Yeah, but at least, u can concentrate more on the music that u are putting and the interactivity that u have with the crowd... Especially with Ableton, it lets u mixe at another level, makin your set top quality, cuz there are less technical stuff to do, so more concentration on the sounds playing...

I second that
