I not really on the fend for yourself mind frame. I have no issues at all letting a friend know about a job posting or handing in a resume for them. But it is up to the friend to prove themselves in the interview, and if hired, at the job.

Depending on how good the friend is would determine if I would give a reference. I have some friends that I love to death, but I wouldn't recommend them as I know their work ethic, and others that are really hard working and I would have no issue referring them.

It is a difficult situation to be in either way....you recommend the person, the employer will hold you accountable for their actions to some extent.....you don't recommend them, you risk the friendship

Caveat however; you refered them, so make sure they're worthy...

sooooooooooooooooo agreed...I have been in my business for 10 years now - and I would never screw my reputation as a worker - no amtter what job it would be...regardless of whether or not someone got the job for me...

I say it all depends on the friend. I have some friends who are diligent and hard working who I would definitely do as much as I could to help them. However, I find that most of these friends rarely ask for help and typically don't require it. Then I have some other friends who are great people but lazy workers and I would not want to put my name on the line by recommending them for work. You have to remember that you could jeapordize your reputation if you back someone who turns out to be a bad employee. If you have doubts about the person it is most likely not something you should do. Giving a friend the heads up on a job in this case would be fine but putting in a good word and trying to help them get the position should be left up to them.

If a friend were to help me get a job I would most certainly work extra hard to make them look good. However, I too try not to ask such things of my good friends. After starting a business with a friend that didn't survive I decided that keeping my business and my personal life separate is the best policy.

I've never gotten a job from a friend's help before, but I have helped a number of my friend's get hired where I've worked. When I worked at the mall, I got two of my best friend's hired there...and they both loved it and the managers were happy with them as well. All I pretty much did was give in their resumes, I put in some good words, and they had to do well on the group interview themselves...which they both aced.

I also got a job for a friend of mine at my current workplace at the University Bookstore. There, again, I just gave in the resume, mentioned to my boss she was my friend and a good worked...and then the rest was up to her to do well at the interview. She did...and is a quite happy employee of the Bookstore.

I would only recommend friends of mine to my employers who I acutually though would be suited well for the job. Also I wouldn't push anything. All I've really done was mentioned a few good things about my friends so that my employers would highlight their resumes, and interview them. The rest is up to them.

same holds true for me.. especially in the consulting world - networking is everything..

i seem to do pretty well helping people look for work and recommending people for a position..

Personally i would, just the way i am i help others. To a certain extent i wouldnt want any moron working on the job, so only close friends i would.

many of u guys may have had bad experiences, but it doesnt mean that you block out people from getting jobs, atleast they asked and are trying to make a effort to work!

what ur saying is true! its hard to get a job without knowing people, thats why i try as much as possible to get them , but if it doesnt work out for them, the way i think is that, the job wasnt for them.

its hard to make money, i really could care, what the company did after they hired him or fired, i know i did a good deed and atleast helped.

i havent worked in small companies, as i have worked is for corporations only on a office job.

I've gotten friends jobs before, and have had good and bad experiences with it.

Now, I'll only try hooking up friends who I KNOW are dependable, and who will not make my name look bad. I'll also avoid hooking up friends on jobs that work weekends. I really don't think they will function at work coming home at 6-10 in the morning from a night of partying :P
