Don't listen to Sunrise's bashing of Gigabyte, he's just full of hate. (Bashing of Maxtor however is warrented.)

I've been doing some research on hardware for my upgrade, that was about 2 months or so ago, but at the time, the Athlons were superior to intel, however AMD are going to change their standards for 64-bit processors early next year I believe, which involves new chipsets and new RAM standards, DDR2.

However 64-bit definantly has its benifits in raw processing that's involved with audio rendering, though much of the final stages are done via sound card.

Choice of LCD monitors is important in gaming (the reason i built my system) but not so much so for running a windows environment, keyboard and mouse... yeah whatever.

And that's one very beefy GFX card for an 'audio' system.

mm asus used to be really good, then dropped a bit a few years ago, not sure how they're doing now.. but on my board for example, they went cheap on a few things, namely power (which goes great with their retarded idle over volting policy .. i wonder if they've since scrapped/fixed that), and semi working sensors... although atleast it otherwise works properly unlike the equivalent gigabyte model.

gigabyte ain't bad at all.

i chose maxtor bc of the 16mb cache, but wtf, seagate has a 5 year warranty on their ide hds now?! geez, i went thru heaps of those 80gbs with the 1 year warranty. so sure, go seagate.

been there done that with AMD, had a dual MP system, watercooled, blah blah, tyan board, never happy with the stability to be honest.

omg! youre so fvcking right! the biggest nerd in our house runs an AMD system and has had nothing but issues. mostly minor, but weird things ive never experienced in 12 years of PC nerding have been happening. the probs have been so random it never occured to me it might be chipset related.

me, ive run intels since 97 and in terms of hardware stability, any problems ive had are coz i did the wrong thing dont have a bad word to say about intel in this regard. i was mucking around with it when it was on once and blew it up. sat her there for 5 mins and she was back in action

dont work on the intestines of your machine when youre not sober kiddies

imo its better to have your machine running everything all the time than (say) getting that extra framerate whilst absolutely embarassing almost everyone youve ever met at quake 3
