The problem with vocals in trance, in general, is just the lyrics.

I've never been that bothered about the quality of the vocalist - as long as he/she can sort of sing, then I'm sure with a bit of technical enhancing it'll sound OK.

But the lyrics, jesus christ. So many trance fans don't seem to care about them, but some of them really put me off the song. I swear, if I go to a houseparty or something, I just can't put something like 'Interstate - I Found U' on the stereo - it's a fucking embarassment. People would think I was some sort of complete pussy. Same goes for 'Burned With Desire' - this completely ametaphorical love stuff is the kind of thing 12 year old girls buy, and then put in their MSN names.

I'm not against love songs, but they have to be well written. They have to be artistic, poetic, original. Not just "OMG I WANT TO HOLD U IN MY ARMS I LOVE U" with some tedious 130bpm McProg beat behind it.

The lyrics are getting generic thesedays. They're all overdone and theyre getting damn cheesy.

Best vocal track Ive heard this year is SBK-Borderline by far. Vocals are really dark and weird, but the whole track is banging and its a breath of fresh air.

For one thing, they add feeling to the song. Instruments can't reproduce the sound of a voice and make it feel attractive.
But the reason I like them so much is because I can sing with them. You all my have sucky voices, but mine is fine. Singing the song is the closest you can possibly get to the song without being it (which is impossible). All those times where there is a perfect musical buildup and want to jump right into the song....when there are vocals you can jump about 85% in and start singing, otherwise you're left longing for more, wishing you were the song. I find songs with vocals (even if the words suck) to be simply more satisfying than purely instrumental tracks. If the vocals musically complement the music, then they've just added another layer of feeling. Thats why they're there.

I don't really care so much for the words and what they mean. I just love listening to sexy sultry female voices.
