Am I allowed to say that some cops are corrupt?

His suspicion is valid, and I for one have the same one, especially after seeing the bouncers making all sorts of deals on the side at coatcheck. Not the same thing, true, but not a long shot either.

I don't think anybody's going to get sued, but without proof, what he said is technically libel. He named specific establishments and claimed that they have a policy of making backroom deals with drug pushers.

I think any reasonably intelligent person should be able to see the difference between expressing an opinion and publicly accusing a person or business of committing criminal acts.

Not that I honestly care about the issue in question but come on... you not only swung below the belt but you missed.

exactly..

freedom of speech does not include libel/slander.

allegations should always be backed up by proof.

But why is it that ANY time someone here has something to say about the Guv bouncers/ shady goings-on/ unsafe practices/ etc... it's ALWAYS 'libel/ slander' in your eyes? I didn't see you running to defend the bouncers accused of sexually assaulting the girl at the CoZo- just because she had a police report doesn't make these other people's experiences any less true than her accusation. Are you calling these people 'liars' for voicing their experiences and concerns? Sounds like another 'libel' case in the making....

This is all pretty scary. I have been generally avoiding the hip-hop scene now for some time, mostly due to the fact that I don't like the music, but this brings a whole new light to the situation.

I generally go to the guv for the music and to have a good time, however the allegations made (ppl walking in without being searched etc) are really scary. They are enough to me to rethink going to the guv, or at least next time I do, be worried and paranoid about this kind of stuff.

Drugs are one thing, cause it's a person's choice to endanger themselves by taking them, however introducing guns puts everyone at risk. Low light, loud music, intoxication, and guns create an environment that does not belong anywhere, especially a club where people go to relax, have fun, and meet people.

I think that metal detectors should be mandatory at all clubs (i.e. tonic) as they will help protect the safety of the club’s patrons and the clubs owners as in the event that something does go wrong, it will be quite clear who’s to blame.

Here’s to metal detectors and responsible owners like whoever owns tonic.

In order for it to be technically called libel what was said would have to be a defamatory statement which damages the reputation of the business/individual. Besides, there would also have to be a financial/economic loss to the business because of the statement.

Please to note, it is only libelous or slanderous if one can prove that they have suffered damages due to the alleged libelous or slanderous statement.

edit --- shit, chemy beat me to it

a police report validates the reporting of what then becomes news. If someone is a suspect after a police report is filed it means that you are pretty much safe to talk about it in a public forum. Even then you have to be careful but it would doubtfully ever come to court since there was police action behind it. If the guy has been charged, obviously the police have enough evidence to charge them.

However, making allegations based on assumption or hearsay is an entirely different matter. And everytime i hear allegations against guv or system employees in tranceaddict its always based on assumptions and hearsay. This is what consitutes libel or slander in the eyes of the law.

People need to remember that this is a public forum and that the laws of the land do apply.

I happen to agree with the libel/slander laws. I dont happen to agree with media bans and gag orders.

However either way we still have to comply with both laws on this board.
