the new electro trend has bein comin' for the past ten years at least. as for ladytron and the rest, it's not a combination of house and electro. it's new school synthpop/whatever, or just existing genres like funky house, prog house, etc, with a beep or two added. oh yeah. and...i say that miss kitten and the hacker have made some electro...but not all...i can't remember which tracks they made are electro, but i heard one or two in a set one time. "sweet dreams" is electro. but a lot of their tracks are probably not electro, now that i look closer.

There IS electro house, but its not Angello/Ingrosso. Real electro house would be stuff like Legowelt, Bangkok Impakt, Putsch 79 and the like. Miss Kittin, Ladytron, Fischerspooner is electroclash, which is a different beast altogether and was quite fashionable a few years back.

But these people aren't electro. Electro by itself is something entirely different. I'll just cutnpaste something I said earlier:

Because of idiot media types knowing a trendy thing when they see it, everything is being called fucking "electro" now. People this has got to stop. Stop professing an affinity for electro when you have no idea what the fuck it is. There's no such thing as electro breaks. Electro is electro.

Electro isn't primarily concerned with whether its a breakbeat or a 4-on-the-floor groove, but it's supposed to be is robot music. Preferably robot music via a TR-808, voice boxes, and twitches and bleeps and zaps. Yes, very 80s. It's supposed to be archaic, tinny stuff. That's why it's called electro. Also: it's great for breaking, popping and locking to. Doing the robot.

Also: Electro is actually FUNKY. Robot funk was one of its euphemisms. That's what kinda distanced it from the Kraftwerk sound, is the application of black sensibility and knack for a good groove.

But it seems today anyone is calling any song that has a moderately sawwave/buzzy synth in it electro. Case in point: Ferry Corsten - Punk. That's not fucking electro, you meatheads. You do not know what electro is if you think that is electro. Alter Ego - Rocker? Nope, not electro. It's actually Homework era French House. Benny Benassi - Satisfaction? ...I would stress to say electroclash, but not electro. More of a stylebite of Kitten and the Glitz era Felix da Housekat. That's why I've always hated that term electroclash, because people have invariably shortened it to electro, and now the term's been dragged through the mud as the hot new clubword, and no one knows what it really is anymore.

Neo Electro is a mid-90s revival of old electro, and more true to form of old electro, with upgraded equipment. Global Communication's Jedi Knights LP is one of the best neo electro albums ever. Run, don't walk, to get it.

v3 of the Guide is going to clear this all up...

which is a pretty stupid thing to call it, since it has nothing to do with electro, don't you think?

mid-90's? i can find...
http://www.discogs.com/label/Direct+Beat
http://www.discogs.com/label/DM+Records
http://www.discogs.com/label/Hip+Rock+Records
http://www.discogs.com/label/Newtown+Music
http://www.discogs.com/label/Dynamix+II+Records
http://www.discogs.com/label/Jamarc+Records
http://www.discogs.com/label/Pandisc
http://www.discogs.com/label/Underground+Resistance
http://www.discogs.com/label/Metroplex
http://www.discogs.com/label/Tashamba+%2F+Konduko
http://www.discogs.com/label/Techno+Kut+Records

make that eleven at least partially electro labels that, when combined, released electro between the years 1989-1993. all weren't pure electro labels...but still...this shows that basically, electro never died in detroit and miami. if electro was strong in the early to mid 80's when it only had three cities to carry it on, did it die enough in the late 80's/early 90's, with only two cities keepin' it "real" so that it could be "resurrected" in the mid-90's?

also, between those years you had the odd electro track made and released somewhere not really as strongly associated with electro at the time, like this, this, this, and this.

Yes, especially since those two cities, during that period, transformed electro into "techno" and "bass" music, concurrently. But you are right. It didn't die insomuch as it had a cooling off period before it's ascent again.

yeah...electro was transformed into "techno" in detroit in the mid 80's by juan atkins, while "bass" music was also invented in the mid-80's in miami when someone figured out how to sustain the kick on an 808, i believe it was amos larkin. so the belville trio takes it from there and maggotron/2livecrew launch electro bass/miami bass, respectively. that was years before the period i state, and early electro was still smokin' at the time. i am talking about the electro that was coming out of those cities during 1989-1993. referred to in both towns as techno bass(coined by DXII) until about 1994 when the more accurate term adopted by miami, electrobass(also coined by DXII), was popularized. at that point techno bass mostly became a detroit gimmick. number one, detroit 'techno bass' is standard electro with limp, dinky, farty basslines and droning african american vocals; number two, where's the bass? why aren't my sub's on fire right now, huh?

it's just the more i learn the more i question the seriousness of this lull, at least in certain places. during the time i highlight, detroit had an...average output of electro. nothing extensive and no established 100% electro artists or labels. aux 88 and drexciya were getting their start, UR was pooping out the odd electro track now and then while Juan did the same. but miami, and florida in general was a freaking underground hotbed for this brand new then-named techno bass music(electro), due in no small part to the stereo wars and their fallout. there were also bass studios in fort lauderdale, orlando, and sarasota. even the most popular labels in miami at the time have albums and albums and ep's and ep's of electro which you won't find on discogs anytime soon. i can buy 10 used electro albums from half as many artists, released on early 90's florida labels, right now through amazon.com that aren't on discogs yet. at the least.

i guess your thing is more with the overall popularity of the stuff...and/or how widespread it was at any given time, and how it finally really began to gain enough weight to move outside of the US around the mid-90's. well then i guess you'd be correct, and i've gone on a horrible tangent. but i never look at the bigger picture man, i only pay attention to the smaller details. i feel like i just answered a psychological evaluation test question.

though you could look at it one of two ways. either electro has never been as popular as it was in the 80's, or it is more popular now than it ever was. has there been a bigger electro hit since Planet Rock or Trans Europe Express? but then, electro has busted out of four american cities since 1995 or so and been taken up by many many more producers from around the world, with relatively less commercial success. hmm.
