Actually, you ask any real, classically trained musician, they will tell you that trance is to intelligent music like a grade 1 reading primer is to sophisticated literature.

See Dick.

See Dick dance to Trance.

True trance (the kind you champion) does require cerebral input from the listener, because it lacks elements that are easy to associate with (can't sing along, can't air guitar, etc). Music is all about evoking reaction from the listener, and by making music more minimal, you can draw a deeper reaction from them. Of course, you could just bore them to shit.

well.. i think it has social and culture factor...
these are the principal...
but i ll not talk about all genres... classical (intelectuals), trance (playboys and more other well-born), heavy metal (intelligent rebels), hip-hop (ignorant rebels)..
ok, maybe i'm wrong classifying these things, hehhe.. :P

Wow, that one's off the mark. How do you explain that the trance parties I go to are probably half white, half asian, with a few blacks and latinos in there as well?

BTW, maybe I missed something, but is there a reason you waste your time on this site if you feel that trance is to music as a reading primer is to literature? Or do you just like to act like a kindergartener sometimes?

probably because of the drugs haha, drugs bring A LOT of people into the scene that wouldn't otherwise be there for just the music, and im definately singling out the asians for that one. Come stand on the floor at the Guvernment in toronto and u'll see what i mean.

hes right what he said about trance, its a very basic form of music and its pretty obvious, everything is 4/4 and you know when every little thing is going to happen. compare a djs trance set to a symphony...

Would that classically trained musician be able to properly synthesize his own sounds on a synth, or properly use MIDI, or be able to make all the levels on the track be just right? Probably not. Half of producing trance is technical as well as musical ability. I'm sorry, but when people belittle the amount of work and skill it takes to make a great trance tune, it pisses me off.

My asian girlfriend isn't there for the drugs (neither are her friends for that matter). I know what you're saying because we have the crackie FOBs in NYC, too, but to make that big of a generalization shows that his exposure to who's listening to the music is a bit sheltered.

Actually, in truth your exposure is sheltered, and his generalizations show that he knows more about who's listening to the music than you do. Your only "rebuttal" for his historically correct musical observations as it relates to various cultures is who you saw at some clubs in your town? Eye laugh.

Hi, his name is Vangelis/Jean Michel Jarre/Philip Glass/Mike Oldfield/Yanni/need I go on?. Perhaps you've heard of him?

Oh, and for the record, Oliver Lieb's classically trained. It shows, doesn't it.

Yeah, I guess in my sheltered world, I found North America's little niche of Asians that listen to melodic trance and don't do tons of drugs.
