D00d, if someone can navagate traffic in their sleep it is certainly conceivable that they can figure out how to open a trunk lid and grab and object or rip a piece of plastic and put on a condom. The eyes are open during almost all parasomnia actions. Normally when we enter REM sleep our bodies become paralized. This is a defense mechanism that prevents us from injuring ourselves by physically reacting to dreams. When a person sufferes from a parasomnia disorder this defense mechanism is turned off. Subsequently, the brain is in REM sleep but the body is fully awake. The result is that real stimulous is received by the brain through the sensory organs but it is only processed in the context of the dream. This means there is no frontal lobe activity.... no voluntary control..... no reason involved. If the action is involuntary then the person cannot be held responsible.
