In september I bought a referbished 4th gen 20gig iPod, and have had no real problems with it. I payed $250 from Canada computers. As far as sound quality, only the headphones that come with it suck (i blew one of the speakers the first day).
As far as iTunes, you don't have to use it, there are other programs that have plug-ins that allow you to sync music using them. WinAmp for sure has one.
I personally really like my iPod. Tons of space, easy to sort and play music, and my battery life it great. I know there are a ton of other great MP3 players out there, iRiver is really good for example, but the only reason I bought my iPod is because there are so many accessories for them. Good luck finding a leather case, sound-dock or in-car connection for an MP3 player other than an iPod; chances are it's going to take you way longer.
I use mine everyday, to and from school, and also as a removable hard-drive for school work. Never once has it failed or done me wrong.
Sorry for anybody that has had bad experiances with theirs.
