Oh get a grip. This has nothing to do with the ego of the headliner or DJ worship. The fact is that people are going to be at the club all night, and warm-up DJs are intended to warm the floor up- not wear out the club within the first hour. The headline DJ is booked to peak the night. It's perfectly understanble that Armin wanted the warm-up guys to keep the tempo down: it'd kill the night if everyone on the dancefloor was knackered before the headliner had even started his set.

What happens if you play at 143 BPM as a warmup for Armin? You don't get anymore gigs. You can play at 160 BPM for all they care... in your bedroom.

When you book a headliner you want him to be the main event of the night.

He should have the possbility to create his set the way he wants to and this could be hard if the warm-up DJ finished his set at 140 bpm. It's not possible for the headliner to make a nice build-up for his set anymore. Either he continues to play at 140 bpm to keep the fire burning or he drops back to 130-135 bpm and gets a bad crowd reaction.

And of course if you book Armin you want him to play much Armada stuff and when you book Tiesto you want him to play much Blackhole Stuff, Paul Vandit and so on.

If you make the warm-up for some of the big guys you should look at their tracklists and avoid to play any tracks that are in there...

it does make sense for the warm up dj to play slower stuff and not keep the energy high

however

even if the energy was high, do you think peopel would actually get into it and burn their energy, even if the dj was playing songs everyone liked?

prob not...people arnt even on the dancefloor until a few min before the headliner anyway...they could play your fav songs and no one would care, cus its not armin, not pvd, and not tiesto. as soon as they hit the decks, they can play shit and its all praise and craziness

at least this is what i experience in america

i saw Kenneth Thomas play a BEAUTIFUL set before armin once and no one was moving on the dancefloor

i think that's the point here... warmup DJs should know their place but having to conform to rules as strict as something like "no trance, nothing over 130" is a bit extreme. so long as they keep the flow steady without trying to out-peak the headliner, then people like armin's agency shouldn't be complaining.

if i were warming up for armin i'd want to raise the barrier a bit before he came on.. just to keep him on his toes.. maybe slip in one peaktime record towards the end

Of course a DJ should play his style and records that he likes.

The promoter has to book the event wisely. He has to think about the Line-Up and running order.

If Armada is in control of the line-up they mostly book it his way:

- Harry Lemon or Perry O'Neil first
- Armin as headliner
- MIKE at last if they want to end the night a bit harder or they choose Perry or Remy to close it a bit more soft

But if Armada isn't in control of the night and doesn't book the other DJs around Armin I understand if they give the promoters guidelines.


But I agree with you that the crowd would hit the dancefloor when Armin comes no matter what the guy before him played.

A no-name could play the same tracks as Armin but only the "freaks" would hit the dancefloor and go nuts. Most party people doesn't care about the music that much but aboute the big name of the DJ. They think that a DJ must be good because he has a big name and a DJ that's unknown couldn't be good...

That is a bit out of line. Of course, when people book those dj's they expect them to play mostly epic trance, cause that's what they usually do. However, a dj playing lots of stuff from his label doesn't come from the wish of the promoters - it comes from the extra-exposure his label gets (and consequently more vinyl sales). It's in my opinion one of the things that has degraded the scene a bit in the last few years, dj's having to stick a bit too much to their labels. It was better when they didn't care.

Still, it'd be pretty retarded to play 5 recent peaktime Armada tracks in a set before Armin.

this is a pretty interesting issue to bring up. when i saw the first post i was thinking to myself," damn Armins managers are fags...". but after reading most of what you guys posted, it makes sense. Why would the opener want to steal the limelight from the person that the people actually paid to see??? if you're the first to come on to the decks, it makes sense that ur just warming the needles up for the main event. Furthermore if you think about it, what label doesn't probably make some sort of special requests pertaining to the opener? but that sending a list of tunes shit so that the other dj doesn't play it is a fucked up.

Trust me, I'm in NO way a fan of Ishkur, but he's got a point with his whole Superstar DJ Theory. And this topic further reinforces that.

Instead of a DJ wanting people coming to a club to have a good time, the WHOLE time they are there, they want their set to be the only thing to focus on, and therefore they are the center of attention, not the music.

So I'm paying a 20$ cover charge to hear 6 hours of good music, when in reality I'm paying 20$ to hear 3 hours of pre-designated music, and 3 hours of good stuff.

Such crap. If Armin is so worried what someone is going to play before him, then he should get on the decks as soon as the club opens, and this way no one else has a chance of playing his tracks.

I remember when everyone was talking about how Armin was "The People's DJ" but in the last year of so he's going the way of Tiestenfold. C'est la vie, bring on the new Dutch Trancers, whoever they may be.
