The CPC had a similar mid-campaign boost in polls last election.

It's unfortunate that things have worked out this way... now NDP support will dwindle and the Liberals will get a boost.

However, a the CPC has been leading polls for a few days, and NDP support has been rising as well...

We'll see. I think a lot will be depend on the debates.

LOL

...is that so?

People like you amuse me. Everyone says the same thing..."oh, if we vote conservative, then we'll lose our healthcare...and gays won't be able to marry!!"

...because those are the 2 most important things in our perfect little Canadian society: "free" healthcare and gay marriage! It's what represents Canada! If we vote in those evil conservatives, then we'll throw everything that makes us "Canadian" away and turn into a war-thriving nation like the evil evil Americans!

Yet another one of those terms that doesn't have a specific meaning that some people like to use as fear mongering.

like I said, call me a fear monger, it's ok. It's far easier than convincing me that their is no 'religious Right' flavour to the CPC/Alliance

The most likely outcome I'm seeing is a CPC minority government, which means that the NDP will hold the balance of power.

I'm sure some of you are asking - what could the Conservatives and the NDP ever possibly work together on? Well, here are a few things:

- They hate the Liberals and have banded together in the past to beat the Liberals
- Electoral & parliamentary reform
- Oversight of appointments (esp. judicial appointments)
- Military spending and reform
- The auto industry (which Harper's budget will greatly benefit, if he can make Layton understand)
- Health care reform (not privatization)

Jack Layton is an intelligent person, albeit a little soft and misguided on certain issues. I think he is capable of rationally evaluating proposals from the CPC and making compromises between his ideal vision of Canada and the reality of what Canada needs right now. I think Harper and Layton both realize that their only chance of political survival is to win and work together.

In addition, it looks like the CPC and the Bloc would be happy to work together on the fiscal imbalance.

What else does a CPC minority, as opposed to a majority government mean?
a) Public health care isn't going anywhere.
b) Gay marriages is very, very unlikely to go anywhere (for those who still care).
c) The separatists will not have their way (it would be political suicide for the CPC).

Personally I'd love to see a majority CPC government, I'm just pointing out the reasons why a minority government could still be good for Canada.

a second minority government is dangerous though.....Canada needs to have a leader and in no way does a minority government show leadership.

I agree it will most likely be a CPC minority government....and that is the best thing that can happen for the liberal party....it will force them to get rid of the old and bring in some new leadership.

I want harper to give me a reason to vote for him.....but I don't feel he is a leader....Layton is a smart man but I feel he will play on whatever side of the fence benefits him. Duceppe may win the Official Opposition....and that would probably benefit the CPC more then the Liberals.

Why not?

In terms of policy, what is important to you?

Chretien was a devout catholic. So why didnt anyone attack his "Christianity" and use scare tactics like "hidden agenda"?

Yeah thats what i thought.

Chretien was pro-abortion and criticized by the Chruch for his liberal social views, was he not?

http://www.wcr.ab.ca/news/2003/0609...ien060903.shtml (catholic site that came up in google, btw.)

"I am a Catholic and for abortion..."

that would indicate that his religion did not interfere with his go governing of the country, given the Catholic Chruch's rather clear position on abortion. Whether Chretien even truly felt that way is irrelevant...that he publicly voiced a separation between religion and policy was the right thing to do.

http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/07/31/vatican030731

On the Vatican's call to oppose gay marriage legislation:

quote:

Chrétien and Liberal MP Paul Martin, who is considered the front-runner to succeed him, are both Catholics but have indicated they won't heed the Vatican's call. A spokesperson says the prime minister respects the church's opinion, but he believes in separation of church and state.

Speaking in Toronto Wednesday, Martin said he must take a wider perspective as a legislator.

Why can't Harper tell us *his* view on abortion? Why did he, prior to the previous election, have to answer for his health critic's call for 3rd party counselling for women seeking abortion?

Why has Harper publicly promised in the House of Commons that he will put gay marriage to a free vote and that he will personally vote to return to a traditional definition of marriage?

yeah that's what I thought.
