There are rumblings on other message boards that in conjunction with the price increase for Rogers Lite, they are also increasing the speed up to 1Mb download, or around 3x as fast as it currently is. Apparently many people have already been upgraded to this speed, although it hasn't been formally announced by Rogers as it continues to be rolled out area by area.

There are other options out there. Welcome to the world of competition.

There is only one signal that runs down the cable (and especially with the bandwidth needed these days for things like Video-on-demand and HDTV), there is not enough room to have 2 competing carriers both transmitting their signal down that wire. It also doesn't make financial sense for 2 separate companies to each string their own wire across every telephone pole, through every sewer so that each house ends up with 2 cable drops that they can pick from.

i recall this as well .. i guess it means there will never be "true" competition in the cable industry ?

Seems Bell might be offering it soon though?

This is from someone who is apparently a "Network Planner" with Bell Expressvu.

"Update for those of you that have Expressvu for condo service (VDSL) Bell is now installing HD receivers from Motorola. I know of at least a dozen installs to date. No PVR yet (maybe in the fall) but if you want your HDTV to look it's best this receiver is a must."

Depends on what you consider the "cable" industry to be. One could argue that the satellite companies are competition, and with Bell in the process of launching IPTV over their phone lines, that could be reasonable competition as well.

Personally, I don't have a huge issue with the price of cable going up a few dollars. It hasn't really increased in a few years, yet a considerable number of new stations have been added in the past year or two. They have to be paid for somehow.

Remember.. inflation is about 2-3%. If you have a cable bill of $100 (arguably high, but not unreasonable if you have digital cable with all the stations), that means that the price should be going up $2-3 every year, even without the addition of new stations / services.

Bell is not a better alternative to Rogers, it's the same shit in different wrapping. Both companies are trying to monopolize the internet/tv markets. Choose either and you lose! It's simply a matter of choosing the best of the worst.

For someone who said that HSE is 'better' than Rogers, lets consider some facts about DSL.

1) The quality of your service is highly dependant on the quality of your phone line. Thus if you live in a shitty neighborhood with shitty lines you'll get shitty services.

2) Distance from server also dictates how fast your service is.

3) Whether your live in a building or house. You'll get distruptions if you live in a building and someone buzzes you from downstairs, nice!

4) # of phones in your residence also dictates service quality, the more you have, the more filters you need to install.

So, either you choose to go with Satan or Lucifer, in the end you are still paying the devil.
