In my experience most of the people that dress "goth" are socially inept. Extrapolating from this it would make sense that they dress in the manner they do in hopes that people will be afraid of them and not approach them. While they endevor to look intimidating, dark, and mysterious they are really just trying to hide that they are scared and uncertain of themselves.
