A Shitty Review of My First Ultra Music Festival
ARRIVE 3 PM
The will call line was 2 hours! Whoever fucked that up, you suck. Thank god my girl and I had tickets already, but my 3 buddies waited 2+ hours.
We get in after a 10 minute wait. Sure enough, people will digi cams and backpacks were getting in, FUCK. Figures I guess. Its hardly crowded at all @ 3. Most of the tents have plenty of room in the back and even the middle. I've never been to a party during the day, what a cool vibe. Plenty of people all fucked up. Saw a guy twitching on the back of a stretcher, idiot. Cops were smoking cigars on their golf carts lol. We grab some 21+ wristbands, fake ID's and all.
The food was great, lots of selection, prices were typically high. The drink lines were fucking long as fucking fuck. $6 for a beer and $8 for a mixed drink including Vodka (Absolut), rum, bourbon, whiskey (Jack Daniels). Mixers included cranberry, orange, grapefruit, redbull, prob some more. At the beginning of the day they mixed em quite stiff with minimal ice, later on their got worse.
So we grab some food and drinks, off to the Cox tent for some Danny Howells. I'd give him an 8.5/10. Pretty damn good. Had be groovin @ 3 PM. On to Marco Carola, not bad either, 8/10. Went to check out the main stage via Infected Mushroom. Not really my style at all, maybe we went during a low point, but I didn't like em much. 6/10. Left quickly. Nic Faniculli was shredding the house tent. 8.5/10. Adam Beyer in the techno tent, WOW. 9/10. On to Darren Emerson, kindof forgot his sound, so no grade. Seb Fontaine @ the house tent was SICK. Huge crowd, serious energy in there. 9/10. Next was DJ Dan in the house tent again. He threw down hard. 9/10.
6:30
Briefly saw Mistress Barbara in the techno tent, awesome awesome awesome, she threw proper tunes male or female, 8.5/10. Josh Wink in the Cox tent threw down proper as well. Sorry I can't remember many styles, it was a long day, I remember liking him though, 8.5/10. Caught some Donald Glaude in the house tent, contrary to the bashing on TA, I liked him, 8/10. Back to the main stage to watch Erick Morillo close... wow. New appreciation for this man. He has some serious skill and well as a serious ear for sick ass tunes. Crowd was bonkers. 9.5/10.
7:30
DJ Hell... wow... talk about dark twisted nasty sick deep hard groovy rythmic shit... 9.5/10. Paul Oakenfold... caught his first 3 tracks. Speakers were fucked up. Felt REAL bad for the guy. Played some nice trance in the beginning too. We had to leave, just couldn't get into it w/ no bass. No grade. Jackal and Hyde vs. Dynamix... WOW WOW WOW. I've never heard basslines like these guys have. If you didn't move during this set you have no soul. Bunch of grimey fucked up dudes jumpin around like crazy. One of my favorite sets of the day. 9.5/10.
8:00
CARL FUCKING COX WAS INSANE!! Anyone can vouch for this. He had his tent pulsating w/ every beat. Just a sick selection of tunes mixed PERFECTLY. This man has talent. I never really appreciated the man until now. I danced harder in this set than any other all day. More sweaty people in here than anywhere else. It pained me too leave but I was so fucking tired. 10/10!! Richie Hawtin, mad skills, loved his sound, 9/10.
9:30
Went to Prodigy. Honestly, they were OK. All I heard was the main singer screaming... ULTRA FESTIVALLLLLAAHHHHHHH!!! ARE YOU READY TO ROCK MIAMI?!!!AHHHHHHHHH.... not really my style. I have much respect for the group, but I'll stick to their CD's. They seemed very full of themselves. I'll never see them live again. 6/10. They def had a unique sound unlike anyone else there. Checked out Mauro Picotto, wowzers, crazy sound he has. Really got down to his shit. 9/10. Went back to Cox for a bit... still TEARING that tent up. People were overflowing.
10:00
REST! HOLY SHIT WERE WE TIRED. Sat down on the hill and absorbed the craziness. A bunch of retarded rollers were hanging around giving horrible light shows. Sucking pasaphires and stumbling around. So pathetic. That was my rant for the day.
10:30
TIME FOR THE MAN. PV FUCKIN D. With the massive crowd, he decided we weren't close enough. After pissing a bunch of people off, we finally made it around 30 ft from the front. Perfect sound, not too crowded, we decided we were OK. Paul van Dyk deserves the number one spot, period. He had that crowd rocking from the first second he stepped up there. I saw him @ Space the night before, but his Ultra set blew it apart. He played some CLASSICS one after another. As well as some newer stuff. Also the BS tracks like Otherside and Time of our lives, fuck that, but thats almost standard for him nowadays. Stayed until close, had no itention of leaving. Absolutely love this guy.
MIDNIGHT
The sound dies Took us about 30 min to get out of downtown, but after that we were smooth sailing on 95 North.
OVERALL
Had a wonderful time. Wouldn't change a thing. Got to see a TON of DJ's for a relatively low price per DJ. Nothing like celebrating EDM w/ 50,000 others. Just a surreal enviornment. Everyone is rolling at this place. NOBODY ones gave me a bad look, a shove, a jerk remark, nothing. Very friendly vibe. I'll be going back many years from now. It was WAY more than I expected.
PS: Sorry my review sucks, I'm terrible w/ tracks, I'm a noob. Grades are personal opinion only w/ the best of my knowledge as far as skill goes. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

Surprising. The problems can be counted in a hand compared to years past.
YEars past there was a rediculous line for WATER not alcohol ( water, now that was chaotic ), lack of bathrooms, DJ"S waaaaaaaaaay off time-slots, dj's not appearing, stages opening almost close to sun-set, bunch of technical difficulties, water costing close to 10 dollars ( that was around Ultra 4 ), and problem getting to Main stages due to full capacity among other bunch of things, getting to Ultra and making a horrendous line, EVEN if you had a ticket, opening the doors always 1 hoour late among other things.
This year there was the WILL call Problem, Sound System Problem, and a Line to the ALCOHOL line. Time slots were on time, impecable, organization for that matter in that term. You could easily walk around from one tent to the other where in bayfront ( Even though I prefer it ) it would be a chaotic maze to get from main stage to the other places.. this was not the case this year, Main stages sucked, okay.. but other then that.. WTFFF... that confuses me to hear comments that it totally sucked. Sets were awesome, as well as tent set ups aKa Carl Cox and Friends, House tents, techno stage. If you went for the music with friends, I mean, theres no way you can have a bad time, perhaps its me, cause I really go for the music, it could be a shitty ass place, but if there's the right vibe with the right music, then what does it suck about it. Oh IM sorry.. yea I just drank water so I guess I saved my bad humour with making the drinkers line.
Ive been reading reviews in newspapers ( miami herald, sun-sentinel ) and veterans, industry alike has been praising and really placing Ultra on the spot this year, its said to have been sold out and even the possibility of going over the 50,000 mark. Surprising.. not sure with this figure but thats the word. It sure as hell was succesful, people showed it with the chanting when the festival was done, ( never seen that before ).. and it sure has hell will be back next year. I hope Global Gatherings helps in making each festival even better crossing ever aspect of it.
