I always wait till a system has been out for a while and has gone on sale before I get it. Hell, I just finally got an Xbox last year and it was only cause someone bought it for me for Christmas. I bought my PS2 when it came out, but at that point I was still living at home, working full-time, and didn't have any bills at all.
Man, were those the good days.
Now, I might try something my buddies mom did years ago. Buy two PS3's(Thank you VISA) the day they come out, sell one on ebay to the people willing to pay a butt load when they can't find one, then take that money and pay off the credit card. I suddenly have a free PS3.
If the plan backfires I think the wife will kill me, but half the fun of being in a relationship is getting in trouble cause makeup sex is always kick ass.

I did the 'Purchase Multiple Consoles at Release' plan for the 360. Was able to get a free 360 that way.
It's a gamble, of course. If they have enough to supply the demand, you won't get much on eBay.
Based off the comments of the low amounts of initial shipments, it's probably wise to jump on the preorder boat. The one problem we're dealing with is... the price. If it'll cost more than $500 (just might be), you won't be seeing a lot of people wanting to pay for it in the first place.

I thought about doing it with the 360, but I totally forgot for some reason.
Think about this though, even if the PS3 is like $500 it will be coming out right before Christmas holiday shopping fever, and you know rich parents are going to do whatever it takes to get their brat child that one present they just have to have. Obviously you know this first hand, but I remember seeing 360's with just a game or two going for $1200 on eBay the week they came out.
