It could be worse (don't try to DJ in China or N.Korea)
Japan seems to be a very hip place to at least visit (must check out: Anime, hardcore gamers, and JPOP). I've heard that living there is very expensive, with apartments around Tokyo reaching 500,000yen per month (that's $5000 ).
Getting paid as a local DJ is hard anywhere you go, not just in Japan. As said before, it may be harder to get integrated into the scene there. You may have better luck securing a reputation if you are willing to travel for gigs (out of the country) during the weekend...
