Sorry to say, but the story you put up above is not really making any sense. Like Nem said, not every situation fits headphone-mixing. Sometimes you have to be creative to get the perfect mix.

This is just a polite debate on this.
I used to do headphone mixing back when I had Traktor & a pair of headphones.
With headphone mixing you are hearing PFL.(prefade level)
You dont hear the actual fading.

I have had trully horrible experiences with it because when I stared djing it was to an audience.
I did not own any dj equipment at the time.
It sounded like shit. An older dj showed me the ropes told me what I was doing was wrong, explained why. I have not looked back.
So now I am just sharing my opinion.

If it works for you keep it up.
Me? I gotta have more cowbell

That does depend a lot on the mixer, not to mention that you are basing this on your experiences with traktor. Most mixers these days allow you to hear post fade too so in effect you do hear the actual fading. Trust me, it does work.

Some one also stated that you can't listen to the master channel with the Xones which is wrong.

Cheers
Nem

You can switch to Master PFL or Channel PFL on my mixer, so you can actually hear the mix as it's coming out of the speakers, including eq's and everything...

I've played out often enough to know that headphone mixing does not always work, but when it does, it makes my mixes a lot smoother.

Headphones allow you to cancel out at alot of background-noise (people screaming, cheering, sound coming from the clubs speakers, etc...) so you can focus purely on the music. That definately improves my mixing.

I'm just speaking for myself here, so if anyone has different ways to achieve the same effect, so be it. Thank God we're not all the same...

when you're playing on a 50,000w sound system, sometimes the best thing to do is turn down the monitors and put your headphones all the way on, makes life easier

Doesn't even have to be 50,000W... When I played at Sambuca that night... I had the monitor blasting far to loud for me (for mixing, but left it loud cuz I was having a blast behind the decks.. haha), and actually made it harder for me to mix.. I was always reverting back to in-can mixing.. and it saved me on a couple mixes..

I personally headphone mix, but can do "one on, one off" if I come across a mixer without a cue blend. I just pray the monitor is decent : )

Do whatever it takes to make your transitions sound good and also do what's comfortable for you...you're there to make the people there dance and enjoy themselves while having fun yourself, not to impress the other DJs in the room.

it's only the try-hards and bedroom folk who will never leave the bedroom that care

any other dj in the room doesn't notice or doesn't care

i know once i'm done playing, i'm working the room and not paying any attention to the music or mixing, let alone how the dj is wearing his headphones
