This can't be enough of an issue to warrant legislation...why not just crack down on the people clearly abusing the privilege or having a garage sale instead of restricting garage sales for everyone?

I'd hardly call this an "attack on our freedom" though Jay...is it not illegal to sell goods without:

- a business license
- GST registration
- reporting your sales as income

?

I would be very against a neighbour of mine who has a garage sale every other weekend, as it's an invasion of my peace and quiet on my street by people parking in front of my house, stepping over my lawn, doing u-turns in my driveway, cleaning their cigarette-butts and their discarded timmy's cups at my curb.

Any more that a couple of times a year is a business. The law will addressed like other laws like this... only when someone complains.

In Aurora, there's a bylaw keeping you from parking your boat or camper in your driveway for a longer time, but you see ppl doing so on every block all year 'round. If a neighbour complains, then a bylaw enforcement officer will be sent. Just like the stupid cat licence bylaw or no filling up your hidden-away backyard bool during periods when the outdated water well supply is low (and do nothing about it dispite the building boom) bylaw. But that's a local rant Jay and I would love to talk about one day.

How is someone making a profit on their own junk?

I agree, there is no reason to have a garage sale more then twice a year. Wtf do you have that needs to be sold that many times or more a year? I had the worst neighbours growing up, who had them almost every other week-end in the summer. . .Holy shit!! And it never got sold , so they kept trying, eventually people stopped coming by because they knew what was there already, but that didnt stop them from setting up thier tables.

I wouldnt say that they need to go to the extent of fining people, but something totally should be done about these garage salers.

my point is that sometimes those who dont seem like they would get it right, actually do.

Imagine if we let homeless bums sell pop and newspapers in traffic? Its great being able to have instant service when you want a beverage and not having to get out to get the local paper. So why not give it a try instead of having greasy piss water squeegeed on my car?

In Newark NJ the guys selling pop on street corners are notorious for car jackings when ever anyone is dumb enough to stop and roll down the window in that neighbourhood. That's why.

while I agree that this would be a paramount waste of time, i think the thread title is a touch intense, dunno exactly where freedom fits in to all of this....keep in mind that in Canada we have basically 7 months of decent weather, so if my neighbour on eitehr side wants to have 2 of 3 or more garage sales in that span of time I would find that annoying....and futher to that I think that if they are excessivly abusing the street for their own garbage sales then if you want to take that to a higher court then so be it...there are freedoms on either side, both on the side of the garbage/garage sale owner and on teh side of everyone else who lives on the street that has to put up with it....

I dont quite think that toronto is anywhere near the level of New Jersey.

People roll their windows down for the squeegee bums here every day. Why cant they be doing something useful instead?
