I agree with everything pkcRAISTLIN writes. Great minds think alike.

nationalism is a by-product of culture. culture is the social manifestation of an idea(s). not all ideas are good ones, get it?

should a german have loved his nazi germany? an italian his fascist italy? a black man his apartheid south africa? nationalism serves as an emotional (as opposed to rational) attachment to an idea. emotional attachments arent a good thing. they serve as a weight that holds new & improved ideas from gaining influence, ie it stunts societal evolution. nationalism would probably be second only to religion as the emotional attachment that has caused the most suffering.

how is it *inherently* bad to dislike one's country? would you blame an iraqi that hated saddam's iraq?

ideas that further the happiness, safety, prosperity etc of citizens (and other nation's citizens) should always be put above the nationalistic pride that is so often used and abused around the world. \"oh, you cant do that, its un-australian\" -i couldnt give a fvck if someones going to arbitrarily label something as \"australianism\" if the idea itself is flawed. it breeds a culture & belief whereby people like yourself give unqualified support to your nation's activities, which is just intellectually dishonest.

whilst it can be harnessed in a positive sense, i always favour being a slave to an ideal rather than some blind notion of subservience to an arbitrary line on a map.

but, feel free to label me as ignorant without actually making an argument.

I did say I was explaining what somebody else said, but I guess maybe you're one of the Americans that can't point to Iraq on a map so maybe it was confusing for you?

inherently bad to dislike one's country? Iraqis didn't hate Iraq they hated the REGIME. How is that the same thing? Oh, wait it's not. How many revolutions happen with the group calling themselves nationalists? They have love for a country NOT the people who run it.

Alot of people are unhappy with the current admin, but you honestly think they wouldn't take up arms if we were attacked and don't have nationalism in their blood? Insane idea.

I honestly don't understand what "loving ones country" means. What do you mean by "country"? The state? The people? The culture? And I pretty much agree with pkcRAISTLIN's post on nationalism.

No. A foreign military occupation, 100,000+ deal civilians, a cripled infrastructure, suffering war crimes and random acts of terrorism, and civil war isn't "liberation" in my book, but maybe yours though.

Let's not forget who supported him and how he came to power to begin with, and armed him with biological weapons he used to gas the Kurds in the first place.
