Definetely need to read the manual for the Point and Shoot cameras. Many times there will be a flower icon symbolizing the macro function and then the manual will tell you your maximum and minimum focusing distance to tell how close you can get to an object before it blurs. If the camera lets you choose the depth of field for macro shots you want it higher if the background is closer and if the background is further away you can set it lower to get a nice blurred background.

i know how to set it up for taking macro shots, and for the most part they come out clear, its just the noise in the photo that is an issue. i dont think i can set the DOF, so i'll just mess around with the iso setting to try to reduce the noise

An external flash helps as well. If your camera has a hot shoe that is another option. I know that when taking super close up macros (~4-6" front the target) the light gets reduced many times indoors or even outdoors because being so close there isn't lots of light getting into the lens. I do have a diffuser on the flash though to decrease the brightness but it allows me to maintain 1/200s shots which works well for the macros. A softbox would be better to decrease the brightness further but I havent found one I want.

You should see some crazy setups for macros. In the fred miranda forums in the macro section guys post their setups sometimes. Many use custom brackets to hold 2-3flashes with diffusers and softboxes to removed unwanted shadows. Must be heavy as hell because just 1 flash is heavy.

i dont really get what you're talking about except for the external flash part. i dont have a setting to manually change the exposure time, its just auto.

wait a bit and i'll upload some macros i just took

edit: here they are, if you want to know the settings, just check the exif info on the page

Yeah dude you need more light. I think its your focus too...

If i lightly press the shutter button it does that focus thingy and i move it around to get it right. Does your cam have anything like that?

One i just took

Maybe as a test try something outside like gwr did with the flower so you get bright natual light. Try resting the camera on something if you don't have a tripod just to reduce the camera shake.
