i use iTunes to update my iPod, rip/burn CDs, and as an audio player. i've only bought a few songs off of iTunes, and it was before i ever had my iPod. all my music is in mp3 format, whether it's stuff i downloaded or songs that i've ripped from CDs.

i don't know that much about the iTunes Music Store file formats, but isn't there some way to convert songs to another format so that they can be used on other mp3 devices? i know they're copyright protected but i'd imagine there's gotta be some way around it...

i do like the iTunes interface a lot, and i find it very easy and convenient to use.

It all depends on how much you would use yours. I got mine for free when I got my Powerbook because I'm a student. I wouldn't have purchased one otherwise and if I had, I would've been pissed; I rarely used it when I first got it, and I haven't even used it once this year. My mom used it when she would go jogging, but for some reason the HD crashed randomnly. So for now, it's sitting under a pile of CD-Rs on my desk.

The iTunes aspect of it meant nothing to me as the MP3s that I want to purchase are very rarely, if ever, available on it, and I was also going to be getting the program for free on my Powerbook.

Although if you listen to music often enough when you're out and about, then I don't see that being a problem for you.

I don't have an i-pod, but I do have an MP3 player that uses CD's. It's very convenient as it plays regular CD format, and MP3 format. Yes, it is considerably larger than that of a typical MP3 player, but in my opinion, from seeing others and reviews from friends, they are crap.

Meh.

HOWEVER...

My room mate has a USB key that also doubles as an MP3 player and radio. That thing is fricken sweet.
