just get it... if the price is right. I figure if you get a rack for no more than $800 or kbd for about $900 - it's a good deal.

I like kbd version of it simply because of the pitch stick... keys themselves feel kinda flimsy, not the best key feel around. Rack is nice due to form factor but damn... it gets sooo hot because of the built-in power transformer and small footprint! Otherwise, no complaints - I love it. Silly easy to create great patches, awesome split capability, easy multis, no menu diving, really wicked arp settings (almost as flexible as a 16 step sequencer)... overall fun piece to play with if you can get it cheap.

Also love my NL3, pitch stick layout is genious, I actually like the flimsy keyboard feel, takes a bit to get used to though
Hmm, I haven't looked much into the arp part of it, I usually use my virus for that stuff, maybe I should have a go..

Got a pretty good sound going with my NL3..

http://it.stlawu.edu/~slucricket/7_cities.mp3

No FX.. just NL3

Basically a detuned square wave with the Shape turned up a bit on both OSCs, the stack turned up to 5 with unison on, and both the Distortion Modulation and the Filter Distortion.

Don't see how they did it with a NL1 since I had to use a bunch of things that are NL3 only... they must of used external distortion and, perhaps, layered the sound a bunch of times (effectivly creating a "stack")

Hey guys,

been following this thread a little and decided to have a go. I'm not really into this producer thingy and tried Reason (is this a good program?) for this sound. This is what I got after 2 days of trying. Please give me some feedback

Hey emc^2,

Love the sounds you made with your Nord 3. I bought a Nord 3 about 6 months ago and I love it to, but I can't get the kind of sounds you got from it. Part of thte reason I can't is becasue I am a beginner. Did you just figure out make these sounds by playing around or do you understand sound design? I have know clue about waveforms and things like that. I have a very musical background I play guitar and I am learning the piano, but I have no clue about music technology. Are there any good web sites to go to and learn, or should I just play around and learn that way?

Hey Malhiotface, thanks for kind words mate. Most of the patches you heard on the demo were made from scratch. I just started twidling knobs with very little logic behind it. Just happened to have found what I was not expecting to find

With Nord 3 it's easy to just initialize the patch and go to town. I use "unison" feature quite heavily and FM portion for some weird detuning. Also, using different LFO shapes and values helps to create "layered" feel. I've been messing with synths for quite some time and read countless books but none really cover the detail to the point of where I'd say I'm comfortable with it. It's all about experimentation.

And when you run out of ideas, take existing patch and tweak it. I call it "patch autopsy" - where you find out what the patch is made of and how other parameters can change its shape. But like everything else in music - sound design is art, not sicence and no book will teach you how to make cool noises.

I read this book as intro. Found it a bit too basic but worth checking out:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/08...2645557?ie=UTF8

If you want some heavy-duty sound design concepts (on electronic component level), check out this book:

Not as long as emc^2's.. but is more trancy

All patches from a bank I'm working on... recorded straight to sound forge.. no external FX... just Nord Lead 3

http://it.stlawu.edu/~slucricket/nl3.mp3

This is complety played by me, as well.. if you listen, you can hear all the times I messed up

And a special bonus goes to the person who can name the TWO games from which I play melodies... one is easy... the other is, perhaps, not.
