Apparently there is now a once a month shot that schizophrenics can get for those who refuse to take their meds. My ex bf's mother has schizophrenia and he told me recently that he takes her for a once a month shot in Toronto. I don't know if it's true though..I haven't confirmed if there is such a needle.
Here is a helpful website: http://www.mentalhealth.com/book/p40-sc01.html |
There is indeed a shot that you can get every three months for this disease. However, it has a lower liklyhood of being successful, and it has SERIOUS side-effects to the patient.
I have two VERY VERY close family members in my family, (and by close, I mean people I lived with growing up), that have been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
One has paranoid schizophrenia, and the other has manic depressive schizophrenia. They are not the exact same, but very similar.
Kelly, if you wish to talk more about this, I have TONNES of information, and A LOT of personal experience dealing with people that have the disease, so feel free to get in touch.
It is not something easy to deal with, for the person with the illness, and for the family. Try and remember though, that although it sucks for you, this is about THEM. They are the ones who are going through the hardest times of their lives, and they are the ones who need the support, love and understanding.
A lot of people do not understand it, and it is a little scary, but whatever you do, don't ostracize him and treat him differently.
