I speak Portuguese, and it uses hyphens in an interesting way. If I were to write the sentence "I told him I had seen her" in Portuguese, I'd hyphenate it so it'd look "(I) told-him that (I) had seen-her" (you can drop the pronoun). In Philosophy, the hyphen is also used as an interesting way to avoid neologism and synthetising a concept into an expression: i.e. "thing-in-itself" rather than "thing in itself" shows more unity, the quasi-words status that should be given to that expression.
These are two examples that show how hyphens can help you. Naturally, it-would-be-stupid-to-hyphenate-everything, but this way of merging words can be benefical if used in moderation.
If anything, the hyphens in Idoru's post only made his thoughts clearer to understand. In fact, I thought your use of hyphens was even better, linking the modifying adjective to the modified noun. |
