canada is my country and i have a right to comment on what happens in it. Im just glad they havnt tried to force something like this on us. Although its bad enough that they ram french down our throats as it is. Honestly, being in toronto wed be better off being officially bilingual in chinese or italian than french. Its such a bloated bureaucracy.

They have bilingual signs everywhere in Montreal! Have you even been there? Or are you just trying to argue because you're bored.

I know this...but the point here is that in quebec they are trying to force them to take away the bilingual signs to make the place "more french"

Btw just imagine they passed a law here about english. Say that we can no longer have french, chinese or whatever on any signs. I dont think people would be having quite the same reaction would they? Lets just say that accusations of racism would be flying everywhere. Why not the same outrage when its on the other foot?

i wanted to tell you guys one thing.

There's no language police, there's no people roaming around the province trying to find violations of the 101 law.

Its an urban legend.

What happens is that someone complains to the OLF and then someone is sent to investigate and try to mediate things out if the complaint is valid.

the last recourse is in tribunals, but usualy it ends mediated and no one ever hears of it.

If you guys could understand French, I would have posted an excellent reportage by Radio-Canada (the other CBC sic.) in Catalonia where they are in the same position in Spain as Québec is in Canada.

They also have language laws, distinct nation and institutions, but there at least Spain gives more autonomy to the province and do recognize its specificity.

And the kicker, the president of Spain actually campaigns with the YES side for more autonomy and have it written in their constitution.

Something we will never witness in our immature federation.

About those "universal" stop signs:

Notice how all these use the "stop" word...

etc etc...

and the reason why the French use "Stop" in France its because its EU standardized.

Totally false. Ask around. They have cameras, and are paid employees.

I think theres a misunderstanding

There is a language police per se.

No, they dont patrol like a regular beat cop looking for infractions
Yes, they are like bylaw enforcement who sit behind a desk until somebody files a complaint, then they take action.

@ least thats what my french immersion school taught me.

police that don't patrol are not police but bureaucrats.

we can play with words here, but the fact is there's no one from the governement walking around to piss buisneses off like the english media wants us to believe.
