Because for me, if I was going to go through the trouble of bringing a laptop and extra gear to a gig, I'd just go full speed ahead and dive in with ableton.

i don't see how that makes you 'not see the point'.

the original 'point' of FS was not having to bring your records anymore. not having to sort through 3000 vinyls to get ready for a gig, not having to put such records at risk of damage, and not having problems in a flight with records being stolen or delayed. and its biggest selling point - you can conrol a digital source with an analog means; vinyl. i still have friends who hate themselves for buying CDJs, and would rather spin the same MP3 they bought off beatport with a vinyl if they could.

what you say about going full speed with ableton, well, FS pre-dates the Ableton DJing craze, not to mention, some people (including me) are against spinning entire sets with Ableton. it's great for recorded sessions, when you really wanna experiment, but unless you are going ALL OUT creating some serious madness on the fly, DJing with Ableton is merely button pressing. the fact that you have to worry a lot less about beatmatching in my eyes obligates you to take everything else a step further. just using it as a source for tracks is pretty retarded, if you're spinning from Ableton, you should at least be able to create a complete collage of tracks based from the tracks' loops. i'm not accusing you of anything, btw, just saying in general.

IMO, when the day comes that i use it out, i will use it to complement my tracks, create tracks from loops on the fly, and such, but i doubt it will be the center of the set.

Great response...

I know that for myself, I DJ because I LIKE TO DJ. For me, ableton just doesn't feel like DJ'ing. It feels like producing.

Every man and his dog are bringing out digital mixing software - at Plasa, just about every stand had DJ software:

Pioneer's DJS rubbish
PCDJ (of course - that's what they do)
Numark's Virtual Vinyl
Mackie have done one too
the Rane stand obviously had Serato

and then there were a couple of loudspeaker manufacturer stands who seemed to be demoing pretty similar systems

I see the point in it all and my mate's found his copy of Final Scratch (which it's gotta be said has got the best name out of all of them) absolutely invaluable for house parties, but it's not something I can be bothered with. I don't do a lot of house parties anymore and I'd never take it to a club (for fear of technical failures, not enough room to set it up etc) and if there's ever going to be a situation when I can't use it, I'm gonna have to burn copies of all of my tunes anyway...

The only time I'm going to move over to DJing with software will be when I'm confident it'll give me serious technical advantages (I've still got a fair amount to nail with 2 decks, 3 CDJs and a mixer full of fx, plus I'm probably gonna grab a second hand EFX 500 pretty soon), and even then I'm not going to do it with serious amounts of outboard equipment to control it all cos otherwise it won't be any fun...

This thread isnt about Ableton, its about something else. I'd rather use Ableton than this, and thats my choice. I dont mind anyone using Serato/FS/this etc. For me, I'd rather skip the riff raff and go straight to full control if I'd be using a laptop in a live environment.

In the meantime I'm content using CDJs live.

dude, what i'm saying is, you can't even compare the two. Ableton is basically a live production tool. FS/Serato, etc. is just an attempt to merge the worlds of digital and analog. for the vinyl junkies who want to play their mp3s, or the guys who are tired of lugging boxes around. nothing more.

For me, the only advantage I got it for was a cash advantage, I don't want to spin CD, I want vinyl, unfortunately, here in Canada it costs too much and it takes weeks to get what I want if I'm lucky, I love Serato as I can find something and play it that night, if I was still in England though I think I would still be pure vinyl, its easy to get and cheaper.

When do they officially start shipping Conectiv? I found one website who start shipping them only in mid Novemeber but as low as 270 with free shipping that's Conectiv Premium includes time coded CDs and vinyl recs. I am thrilled, this should give Serato some competition.
