all the flaming lips albums are good for the most part... soft bulletin is my favourite, though it took a while to become palatable

Majutsu's definition is right. I don't really listen to any stoner rock except possibly Cathedral, who were originally a doom metal band but who may qualify as stoner/groove metal nowadays.

You should check out Cathedral anyway. They're badass.

im sorry but wouldnt "stoner rock" be considered any rock someone who is stoned listens to? thers not "MDMA dance music". or is there?

Yeah. Prog metal. I like me some prog rock, but since I never really got bit by the metal bug, I don't know if I could really stand to listen to it that much. One of these years perhaps.

Regardless, can't you see the reason behind using a genre title, as a way of finding similar sounds.

Just because genres may be difficult to keep up with, or keep track of, is not reason for them not to serve a useful purpose.

I don't see why you would be so quick to judge the value of this genre, because in my opinion, rock could use more genres, where as EDM has way more genres defined (or maybe undefined would be a better word) already than it needs.

Rock could use MORE genres?? Hell, do you know how many there are under the Punk umbrella alone? Trust me, when it comes to rock purists, they can be just as equally anal about sub-micro-genres as any EDM fan.

Not only do I disagree with your entire post, but I'd like to emphasize just how idiotic I think it is that this genre of "Stoner Rock" even exists, especially when the vast majority of Stoners don't listen to shit that's even close to the bands everyone seems to be describing in here.

"Stoner" rock can be anything that you enjoy listening to when you're stoned, not some ultra pretentious title for bullshit rock music that isn't very good anyway.

And no, Rock doesn't need any more genres. There are enough shit rock bands out there already, we don't need even more trying to pigeonhole themselves into progressively more and more random and meaningless subgenres.

So then by your theory.

Trance can be anything that puts me into a trance, well, fred penner is trance then.

Drum and Bass can be anything with drum and bass right? So actually, all stoner rock bands would be DnB too.

I get a big kick out of how you're trying to fight against a well established genre of music.

I can assure you more people recognize stoner rock as a proper genre of music, than people even recognize Trance as a proper genre of music. That is obviously only because more people are interested in rock, but just because you have fallen behind the times, and gotten stuck in your little "OH I SWEAR ITS NOT PROG" genres doesn't mean you can act like rock doesn't change when you're not around.
